Canada: Jasper
Jasper was my last stop before heading home to Vancouver from my Canada150 train trip with Via Rail’s Canada150 youth pass. Driving to Jasper from Edmonton was around a 3.5 hour drive with a lovely view of the mountains. Jasper is mostly an outdoors nature stop, with lots of camping and hiking options.
On the way to Jasper, we stopped at this beautiful body of water because we saw another guy walking around in it. The water looked super clear and shallow and we ended up taking a lot of nice photos in this spontaneous spot.
We went to see Maligne Canyon in the Jasper National Park, which is a deep canyon with a waterfall running through it. Funny thing is we actually ran into my train family at Maligne Canyon!
My train family and I separated after we reached Edmonton because I had plans to meet up with some university friends. The rest of them didn’t get off at Edmonton and instead got off at Jasper. We made plans to meet again in Vancouver where I would be able to show them around.
We did a white water river rafting tour the next day. I don’t have photos (only video, which you can watch here) and was pretty exhausted after that. We were also hoping to kayak at Maligne Lake, but with the forest fires the air was quite smoky and the view at the lake was not as nice as we were hoping it would be. It also got strangely cold the next day so we decided only to walk a small trail around the lake instead.
I saw some photos my train family took when they went on a different day and the lake looked almost aqua blue. Hopefully the next time I’m in Jasper I’ll be able to see the lake in that condition.
BC Wildfires have been a big problem every summer in the last recent years and I am sad to see the destruction in person. When you’re in Vancouver, you don’t notice it much because it’s so far away.
Sincerely, Loewe
