Netherlands: Amsterdam

Amsterdam! The land of marijuana – here we are. Amsterdam was the second stop on #FLeuro2016, my backpacking trip through Europe.

We actually spent Canada Day in Amsterdam (and no we didn’t get high… that day).

First mistake was made: we booked an airbnb that was too far. Please make sure you find accommodations inside Amsterdam city, otherwise it’s quite expensive to take the train back and forth from the suburbs of Amsterdam. It can cost 14 euros for one way, which adds up quickly.

Second mistake: I got sick. I was sick for the 3/5 days we were in Amsterdam and by sick I meant I was in bed with high fevers and could not leave the airbnb. Unfortunately, Fatima spent most of those 3 days taking care of me instead of exploring on her own (bless her heart). Thankfully, I still had 2 days to explore Amsterdam after I recovered.

We took a city boat tour through the canals of Amsterdam, where we befriended 2 Irish guys through the topic of potatoes. We went to eat fajitas together afterwards.

Fajitas at Rancho Argentinian Grill.

Amsterdam city is full of restaurants and snack shops at every corner – probably to appease those with the munchies. One interesting thing I noticed was that they serve mayo with french fries instead of ketchup – still yummy because potatoes are the best.

Everything is within walking distance, so we walked to the Van Gogh Museum, where the “I amsterdam” installation sits. No, we didn’t go inside the Van Gogh Museum.

Hi we are basic tourists again.

We did, however, go inside the Madam Tussand wax museum even though Fatima was deathly afraid of wax figures (bless her soul x2).

And I’m sure you’ve been scrolling all this time to wonder: did you even try weed??

The answer is yes, we did because it is legal in Amsterdam BUT we realized their joints have tobacco mixed in and that was a big no-no for me. Instead, we shared a space cake, which is essentially a very strong weed brownie.

Let’s just say I ate a quarter piece and spent the rest of the evening paranoid about cats following us back to our airbnb. Fatima also didn’t talk for around 4 hours.

But it’s ok! We’re good! We didn’t die. Yet.

And we made sure to finish the rest of the space cake before we left Amsterdam. We basically ate it right before we boarded our train to Germany and I passed out for 4 hours. When I woke up, there was a bunch of gibberish in my traveler’s notebook. I’m not sure if this makes it the best travel journal entry so far or the worst because it is literally illegible.

Sincerely, Loewe
