Alaska: Glacier Bay
The next stop after Skagway on our Alaska Cruise was Glacier Bay. Glacier Bay is a national park full of glaciers. You can enter the park via a helicopter, a cruise ship, or self kayaking. Of course, we visited Glacier Bay on the ship.
You can wake up early to go to the observation deck on the 10th floor to watch the glaciers from the glass window room with commentary by a park ranger. You can also actually go outside to the deck and look at the glaciers from there. If you have a balcony room like we did, you can also view it from your very own balcony. The cruise ship captain will steer the ship both ways so both sides of the ship gets some time in front of the glaciers.
Our ship, the Nieuw Amsterdam stopped quite close to a tidewater glacier, where we were able to see bits of the glacier falling into the water.
Our ship spent around 9 hours touring Glacier Bay and it was truly a beautiful site filled with wildlife. Everything was quite and still and it may feel as if nothing is happening, but the glaciers have been melting for centuries. Seeing pieces of the glacier fall off was enough.
Although it was May, it was still chilly and we had to wear coats if we left the inside of the ship to take photos.
Thought I’d mention we also had a few nice afternoon teas on the cruise ship on these “sea” days. The sweets would change daily but it was nice when they used the cake trays.
Sincerely, Loewe
