Alaska: Skagway

We arrived in Skagway the next day after leaving Juneau. Skagway is home to a lot of gold-rush history and if you walk through the streets you’ll see a lot of stores selling souvenir gold or jewelry.

We signed up for a private bus tour up to Northern Skagway and the border between Alaska and Yukon. They took us down some scenic roads (super empty) and stopped at waterfalls and ice fields to let us take photos. My relatives from Hong Kong were very pleased with how fresh the air was (idk lol). Once we neared the Yukon border, we were finally able to see some snow.

The random empty ice field we stopped at was very beautiful and serene.

Back on the cruise ship, we had a “gala night”, which meant everybody got to dress up to eat in the dining hall. They offered a “special” 3-course menu, but keep in mind that the dining hall always offers a 3-course menu. We were expecting the cruise ship captain to come around and take photos with us but that did not happen, so mostly we were wondering why we had to dress up to go for dinner. They encouraged people to sit down and take awkward family portraits as well, and then they printed those along the walls and displayed them to everyone, hoping you will then pay for one.

Around this time on the cruise, my sister and I both got sick. My sister had an allergic reaction from the shellfish (king crab) we ate back in Juneau, and I had an on-and-off fever from the cold. Therefore, the two of us spent a lot of time in our cabin watching movies and trying to get wifi from our pocket wifi.

Our “alcohol night” (bar-hopping across the 3 different bars in the ship) was cancelled because of not enough sign-ups. My sister attempted to play majority trivia – you just have to be in the majority to win the question – but she was eliminated after the first round.

The question was “Fill in the blank: My mother-in-law is _____”. The majority answer was “dead”.

By now my sister and I realized this was going to be a very tame trip, surrounded by senior folks and I guess when you are sick, you are ok with that.

Sincerely, Loewe
