Bbong: Korean-Chinese restaurant in Coquitlam

Bbong is a Korean-Chinese restaurant located in the “K-town” of the Greater Vancouver area (Lougheed/Burquitlam). Their menu boasts simple Korean-Chinese dishes and large portions.

This review is based on an in-dining experience.

Interior

The restaurant is quite large and seats many tables. They have these signature red chairs that may or may not have cracks in the seat cushions lol. For big tables, you may be seated in booths or these hidden little rooms that have high walls. If you are seated in the rooms, it may be hard for a server to see you need something.

Overall, it’s a very casual feel.

Food

We order one appetizer, entree and a combo for 5-6 people.

Seafood & green onion pancake ($24)

This pancake is large and comes in a sizzling hot plate. For the most part, there is a reasonable amount of seafood in there, which is good. The green onion slices are a bit too big but it’s fine. Shared between 6 people, everyone can get at least 1 big slice. I found the pancake to slightly fall apart so that was the only negative point (slice should stay together better).

Bokkeum bap ($13)

Bokkeum bap is a Korean fried rice with some of the jjajang sauce (black bean sauce). It comes with a bowl of fried rice, sauce and some vegetables. This is a good alternative if you don’t like jajangmyeon (black bean sauce with noodles).

Family combo B ($43)

This combo comes with the holy trinity – 1 bowl of jjajangmyeon, 1 bowl of jjampong (spicy seafood noodles) and 1 plate of kkan pung gi (sweet & spicy fried chicken).

Jjangmyeon

Similar to the fried rice, this is a dish using the black bean sauce with noodles. This is a huge bowl and the sauce has minced meats and onions. Regular price for this dish at bbong is $10 without the combo.

I usually like my first bite of jjangmyeon, but find it a little too greasy near the end. But one good thing about this noodle dish is that it is not spicy at all.

Jjampong

Jjampong are spicy seafood noodles. Between this and jjangmyeon, I prefer this dish but it is spicy so near the end I also die. The noodles are the same type, the broth is spicy and there is some decent seafood mixed in there. Again, huge portions – big enough to share with 2 people.

Kkan pung gi

This plate of spicy & sweet fried chicken is delicious. The batter is very crunchy and the sweet & spicy sauce is addicting even if you can’t eat spicy foods that well. Again, HUGE portions – this is enough to share with 4 adults if you only eat this dish alone.

Final thoughts

Loewe’s rating: โญโญโญโญ

We had a very filling and cheap dinner at bbong. At $43-45 for a combo, it is a total steal. Portions are huge and great for sharing.

Out of all the dishes, I liked the fried chicken the best with the jjampong being my second favourite dish of the night. But I would say any of their family combos offer a great deal and variety.

Sincerely, Loewe
