Blueberry picking at Middelveen Blueberry Farm
Blueberry picking is a family favourite pastime for my family. I have many childhood memories of going blueberry picking and competing with my sister to see who can find the largest blueberry.
My family and I recently went to Middelveen Blueberry Farm in Pitt Meadows to go blueberry picking. This farm is recommended by my sister who went recently.
You may wonder: are blueberries really worth it? Driving there, the human labour of picking them – is it really worth it?
The answer is yes if you like blueberries and a definite yes if you have children. Some reasons why you should consider blueberry picking for your next family or date activity:
Hello to the most beautiful blueberries
No argument here – if you handpick blueberries, all of them will be higher quality. You won’t get those random sour or rotten ones because you have standards, right?
Middelveen grows 14 different types of blueberries but only 7 types are available for U-pick:
- Reka
- Duke
- Spartan
- Blue Gold
- Sunrise
- Hardy Blue
- Nelson
Our family favourite is Duke. They are the second largest blueberry type and have a crispy skin. We also enjoyed Reka (smaller and more sour like coca cola) and Spartan (crispier skin than Duke and a different type of sweetness).
It’s cheap AYCE!
It is all-you-can-eat inside the farm, so if you are an asshole you can just go in, eat and leave. We did taste the 7 different types before deciding on which ones to pick.
If you decide to purchase your picked blueberries, it costs $2 per pound, which is a very reasonable price!
Hop on for a tractor ride
One service that my family appreciated a lot was the short tractor ride we were given by the owner of the farm. There’s room to sit 2 in the front and everyone else gets to stand in the back – fun!
The tractor takes you to taste some of the different blueberries and drops you off at your designated row based on which type you want to pick. If your timing is right, you can also catch a ride back to the farm house.
Pretty scenery for the gram
The rows and rows of blueberry plants? vines? trees? shrubs? idk, anyways they are quite pretty to walk around and take pictures. I also find it just calming to walk around and pick blueberries.
Good for old and young people
One thing I dislike about strawberry picking or cherry picking is that it actually feels like labour. Strawberries grow in little shrubs so you always have to bend your back unless they have the plants elevated in a greenhouse. Cherries require a ladder so that’s already too much work.
Blueberries though are a perfect height – human height is what I would call it. I’m only 5’1″ but I can reach for the top blueberry if I have to. They also grow low so if you have children, they can also enjoy the U-pick experience without feeling frustrated.
Final thoughts
My family picked around 22 lbs so we paid $45 total. We spent 3 hours here but we are an intense blueberry family. Even 1 hour can be enough for a plentiful takeaway home.
Middelveen Blueberry Farm was a very pleasant and authentic U-pick experience. The farm is family-run and has been producing blueberries since 1989. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable about blueberries and never pressured you to pick or buy more than you need to. A great family activity for summer and the blueberries are delicious!
