Burgoo: Comfort food in North Vancouver

Burgoo is a bistro with locations in downtown Vancouver, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, North Vancouver, and Point Grey. They specialize in comfort food so they are one of my favourite spots on a rainy day.

This review is based on an in-dining experience at the North Vancouver location.

Interior

Tables were already largely spaced out so there were no plexi glass barriers. All servers were wearing a face mask and we were also required to wear a mask whenever we were not at our table.

The inside of the North Vancouver location feels like a warm and cozy cottage on the ski slopes. We were near a fireplace so we were extra warm. Booths are comfy and there are a lot of wooden accents. Comfy!

Food

Mac & cheese ($15)

Mac & cheese is a long time North American comfort food. Their full serving is $15 but you can always order a mini mac & cheese as a side for $9 instead. The mac & cheese is baked and loaded with aged white cheddar until golden. You can add a tomato, bacon, or persillade for additional $1-2.

French onion soup ($13)

Burgoo’s french onion soup is one of their signature menu items. If you order this by itself, it costs $13 and comes with deeply roasted onions, rich beef broth, country croutons, gruyere, emmenthal & mozzarella. I love the top of the soup how it has that cheesy goodness.

You can also order this as part of their soup and sandwich combo for a few additional dollars.

Soup + Sandwich combo ($19)

I order the after school special, which is a soup + sandwich combo. For my soup, I choose the crab bisque and for my sandwich, I choose the dos diablo. If you order these 2 items separately, they cost $9 and $17 respectfully.

The crab bisque has bits of smooth crab, red pepper cream & fennel scented bisque. The bisque did not taste too strongly of crab but it did have the crab meat in there. I would say it had a stronger tomato/red pepper taste so it was almost like a tomato/pepper soup. I still really liked it as it was a great pairing for my sandwich.

The dos diablo sandwich uses melted white cheddar, chunks of spicy chorizo, red onion & roasted pepper. Think of it like a spicy grilled cheese with some sausage in there. I think it added a unique kick and it tasted great dipped in the soup. The 2 sandwiches were really big too and the edges had this cheese griddle which was amazing.

Final thoughts

Loewe’s rating: โญโญโญโญ

Burgoo is your one-stop shop for comfort food and everyone is sure to find something they would like to order from their menu of classic eats.

Prices are above average but portion sizes are bigger than you’d think. I couldn’t finish my sandwich and soup and my boyfriend also could not finish his mac and cheese! Also, the quality of their soups and sandwiches are above average.

We will be sure to return to different locations whenever we crave something warm and cozy in our stomachs.

Sincerely, Loewe
