Comery Block Barbecue: Affordable BBQ in Calgary

This year I visited Calgary for the Calgary Stampede and one of the top foods I wanted to eat was some good ol’ barbeque.

We ended up eating this at Comery Block Barbeque, a casual restaurant downtown that specializes in smoked meats, sandwiches, whiskey and craft beers. We came here as a group of 6 adults and here was our experience.

The vibe

We didn’t have a reservation but walked in at an early dinner time (5pm) so we were able to be seated right away on the outdoor patio.

The patio is pretty nice and spacious with big picnic tables and umbrellas at every table which was great because there was some light rain here and there. The menu is pretty simple and there’s a lot of mix-and-match items. They also had on display 3 BBQ sauces that were all delicious – I enjoyed the medium one the most.

Food review

Here is what we ordered to be shared between 2 adults. Prices are in CAD and rounded to the nearest dollar for simplicity.

Meat + sides

The menu is pretty flexible with different sandwiches and meat by the 0.5 lb. Everything you order gets added into a tray.

We ordered:

  • 🥩 Brisket ($19/half lb)
  • 🔥 Burnt ends ($19)
  • 🌽 Corn wrapped in bacon ($7)
  • 🍞 Cornbread ($2)

I was really expecting the brisket to be the star of the show because my husband and I love brisket so much. Although it was pretty good, we were not blown away.

What actually blew me away were the burnt ends – these were so fatty and delicious and had great sauce on them already. This is a must order!

The corn wrapped in bacon kind of surprised me. I did see a lot of folks order it but I thought it’s just corn and bacon, how great can it be? The bacon was crispy and that flavour leaks into the corn. It was a little messy to eat but delicious!

The cornbread was an amazing side to add on for only $2. It had an amazing crumbly texture and the honey butter was a heavenly pairing.

Final thoughts

Loewe’s rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We had a delicious dinner at Comery Block Barbeque in Calgary.

I found the BBQ here to be very affordable and a high quality. All the meats were smoked and delicious! I don’t think you can get this quality BBQ for this price in Vancouver. Our total came to under $50 for 2 people before tax, tip and no drinks.

Sides were also pretty reasonable with almost all of them being $7 and a great variety to choose from, including potato salad, creamy slaw, grits, beans, fries, and more.

Service was good albeit we were a pretty non-fussy table. Food came out quickly for all of us.

Sincerely, Loewe
