Fat Tuna: Sushi takeout in Coquitlam

Fat Tuna is a Japanese sushi restaurant located in Coquitlam. We decided to check them out as they appeared to be a new restaurant on our food delivery app. This review is based on a takeout experience.

Food

Fat tuna dinner combo A ($25)

Fat Tuna’s dinner combos are very intriguing. They are not just a regular bento, so I find that to be interesting. Combo A comes with 2 pieces of vegetable tempura, 2 pieces of prawn tempura, 14 pieces of assorted sashimi with crispy crab rice.

Vegetable and prawn tempura

Pretty standard tempura. It came with one yam and one with squash. All of the tempura were fried nicely and it was not soggy from the takeout.

Assorted sashimi

This is quite a nice selection of sashimi if you love salmon and tuna. It comes with the standard salmon, tuna, smoked salmon and akami tuna. It also has horse mackerel and a seared aburi tuna. Slices of sashimi were thick and fresh – generous portions but as you can see, you don’t too much variety in terms of different fishes.

Crispy crab rice

This item is kind of weird. I feel like it’s comprised of their leftovers so it’s kind of a clever way for them to get rid of extra rice, fake crab meat and tempura flakes. It’s quite a lot but you can eat it with your sashimi or just wrap it up in some seaweed if you have it at home.

Spicy salmon sashimi ($15 – full order)

The full order of spicy salmon sashimi only comes with 6 large pieces so it’s not the kind of portion you would get from Sushi Town or Sushi California. Taste is the same as any other sushi place that offers this appetizer.

Negitoro roll ($5) + individual nigiri ($4-6 each)

We also add on an order of negitoro roll and assorted nigiris of our choice. We choose tamago nigiri ($3.50), unagi nigiri ($6) and toro nigiri ($6).

I love the nigiri! Portion sizes are big and the toro ones are legit. Thick slices, nicely cut. The tamago is thick and sweet. Unagi nigiri has large slices as well. Everything tasted fresh and nothing frozen.

Final thoughts

Loewe’s rating: โญโญโญ

In total, we spent $90 after tax, tip and delivery. Note that on the food delivery apps, the prices will be slightly higher than from their direct menu.

We enjoyed our dinner from Fat Tuna and we will be ordering from them again. The dinner combo honestly would have been enough to make us full and they have more to choose from than Combo A. We could not finish all the food we ordered for 2 people. Out of everything, I would not order the spicy salmon sashimi again, but everything else came at a good price and good portions.

Sincerely, Loewe
