Grill Party: Chinese BBQ in Richmond (with shots)

Bring your alcoholic friends because I found a new Chinese BBQ spot that is open until 3 am πŸ₯΄.

Grill Party is located in Richmond and their menu boasts cheap alcohol and Northern Chinese style BBQ skewers and items. I came here to celebrate my friend’s birthday in a large table of 10 people (make a reservation!).

The vibe

The interior of Grill Party is like neon city. Everywhere you look, there are neon signs, lit-up artwork and LED lights encouraging you to eat, drink, party and have a good time. It is very colourful inside too due to the neon lighting and you will see all the photos in this review will have that kind of reddish-purple lighting casted on it.

It’s a cool vibe but definitely your eyes can get dry if you get too distracted by all the flashiness.

The space of the restaurant is pretty spacious and I actually found the tables and chairs to be quite interesting because they look like antique Chinese furniture with the wooden carved chairs and table legs.

Food and drinks review

We ordered everything to share so this post won’t go too into detail about each skewer or anything like that. Prices are in CAD and rounded to the nearest dollar for simplicity.

Cucumber with garlic ($12)

Starting off strong with a vegetable dish, we order 2 plates of this cucumber salad because it is a must for Chinese BBQ. This is a cold dish and the cucumbers are smashed and tossed in this garlic and cilantro sauce – very refreshing!

Skewers ($5+)

For a table of 10, we basically just order a bunch of skewers and everybody just goes at them. The cheapest skewers start at around $5 for a minimum order of 2, but most orders are a minimum of 5 skewers each. It definitely adds up over time.

Some of my favourite skewers to get are:

  • Chicken skin
  • Pork belly
  • beef tendon or tongue
  • pork intestines
  • Chicken wings
  • prawn

Other BBQ items I also really like to get include things like the clams with vermicelli, corn with cheese, BBQ squid tentacles, and the BBQ steamed buns or toast (I know… πŸ’€ it’s weird but I gotta get it).

I felt all the BBQ items and skewers were pretty average and I actually find a lot of Chinese BBQ places taste very similar because they use the same seasonings. In general, there wasn’t any stand-out dish for me.

For funsies, I did notice they had some unique items in here like lamp penis or testicles 🀭, duck head, frog legs, etc.

Milky way ($60)

What was the most eye-catching item was this tower of shots called the milky way 🀩. You actually get 25 shots for $60, which is not a bad price at all but overall it’s only around 10oz.

The alcohol is a mixture of vodka, orange, rum, pineapple, and blue curacao. They were colourful and tasted very delicious (mostly juice).

Lemon drops ($50)

Actually, these additional shots we ordered were the real nasty ones. I usually like lemon drops so I thought 20 lemon drops for $50 and 7oz is also not a bad deal. Unfortunately, these are some of the nastiest lemon shots I’ve ever had 🀒 – they tasted super strong!

Final thoughts

Loewe’s rating: ⭐️⭐️

We had a fun dinner at Grill Party and the shots were definitely fun and exciting, but I have to give Grill Party a 2 star rating because I felt the food was really just average and nothing went above average.

On one hand, everything tasted fine – all flavours were as expected. On the other hand, I don’t think I would return when there is an abundance of Chinese BBQ spots specifically in the Richmond area.

The vibe is cool though and I think the extensive alcohol menu and being open until 3am on weekends makes this a trendy and popular spot for some very late night drinking and partying.

Sincerely, Loewe
