HAAN: Korean BBQ in Coquitlam

HAAN Korean BBQ is a Korean barbecue restaurant in Coquitlam. This is actually one of my personal favourite restaurants in Coquitlam so I come to eat here quite regularly.

This review is based on an in-dining experience during covid-19 so I will also include information on how they are following safety protocols.

Interior

HAAN is a decently sized restaurant. Their bbq booths can comfortably fit 6 people and they are already quite spaced out so your clothes don’t smell too much.

For covid-19, they have alternating tables so you are never sitting next to another table in any direction. They also removed their menu so you have to order by reading their online menu on their website.

When you first come in, you will be asked to sanitize your hands. All the workers wear face masks and gloves when servicing you. Wait times can be complicated as you are not allowed to wait inside the restaurant or even loiter outside, so make sure you make a reservation or come early before the dinner rush to avoid this.

Food

In addition to bbq, they also have traditional Korean items you can order from the menu.

Korean bbq ($14-35)

To order their Korean BBQ, you need to make a minimum of 2 orders per meat. All BBQ items come with side dishes, a bean paste soup and vegetables.

For 3 people, we order 2 orders of the pork belly ($18) and 2 orders of marinated beef ($16).

The meats are really yummy and marinated well. The grill is also accessible to anyone on the table so it’s easy to pick up pieces and cut them into smaller bite-sized pieces.

I personally like to make wraps with my Korean bbq meats. They always serve less wraps/lettuce in the beginning but you can always ask for more.

Bossam ($30)

Bossam is sliced pork belly. HAAN’s bossam is a little different from other restaurants because they also marinate their pork belly in a special herb sauce. Usually at other Korean restaurants, they don’t marinate the pork belly for bossam.

This dish comes with radish kimchi and yam. We really liked this dish because we love radish kimchi and we love the added bonus of the pork belly being marinated. This dish is served cold and even though they use pork belly, which can be quite fatty, it tastes very refreshing and not greasy at all.

Naengmyeon ($10)

My boyfriend likes to end his Korean BBQ meal with a nice cold bowl of naengmyeon, which means “cold noodles”. This time, we try their spicy cold noodles instead of their usual non-spicy version.

The spicy cold noodles are different in that they don’t have that ice cube broth. Instead, they have a cold spicy sauce that gets mixed with the thin noodles. It is not too spicy but it’s definitely a big bowl of noods. Like the usual version, they have some cucumbers, a boiled egg and a few slices of thin beef.

Final thoughts

HAAN Korean BBQ is a local favourite spot for me and I am happy to have visited for an in-dining experience during covid. The staff are very friendly and following the safety protocols, which made me feel comfortable dining out.

Their Korean bbq is good but it may be slightly pricier than other Korean bbq places you can find in the Lougheed area. However, I find their meat is marinated better and their other menu items are more delicious. If you are in the Coquitlam area, please check them out!

Sincerely, Loewe
