HK BBQ Master: Best Cantonese barbecue in Richmond

This is going to be a fast and furious review because I don’t think HQ BBQ Master needs little potato me to do a review of their food ๐Ÿ˜…. They are an OG, celebrity-loved casual spot for Chinese barbecue meats in Richmond.

This was, however, my first time dining inside so I thought at least I should write something about this place even though it’s already so well-received.

The vibe

HK BBQ Master is definitely more of a takeout place and they are fast in bringing out your food. They are located underneath a Superstore (๐Ÿคจ really random, I know) and the place is pretty small. Despite this, they do have a few tables you can sit and dine in.

We came as a group of 4 adults and were able to get a seat pretty quickly. They are a very casual grab-and-go type of spot, so tables open up pretty quickly and there’s a separate line for people picking up takeout.

Tables are small and wooden, with little dividers between tables – most likely left over from covid times.

Their menu is simple but despite this, we took a long time deciding what to order. The server was very patient with us since I am used to Chinese restaurants rushing you and being very fast and snappy.

Food review

Here is everything we ordered to share between 4 people. Prices are in CAD and rounded to the nearest dollar. Please note that HK BBQ Master is cash only!

Soya sauce chicken ($19)

Instead of every person ordering a combo on rice, we decided to order the full dishes to share and add on bowls of rice instead so we get more meat and less rice.

The soya sauce chicken (side order) is $19. I’m not sure if a full order of chicken is also $19 (I don’t remember the price) but our order came with a generous amount of food. Despite its humble appearance, I was very impressed with this soya sauce chicken ๐Ÿ˜ณ. It was so savoury, full of flavour, juicy and moist! Perfect with white rice and some green onion sauce.

2 Kinds of BBQ ($25)

We took a long time to decide between the 3 remaining BBQ options since we already decided to order the soya sauce chicken. The 3 remaining options are: Honey BBQ pork, crispy roasted pork or BBQ duck. After a long discussion, we were told that they were actually sold out of the BBQ duck so I guess our discussion was unnecessary ๐Ÿ’€.

We went with the honey BBQ pork and crispy roasted pork and we also chose a mixture of fatty and lean (you can choose all fatty or all lean). I thought having this option was also very nice ๐Ÿ‘.

Out of the two, I did like the crispy roasted pork more, but honestly both were delicious. I’m just used to eating a lot of honey BBQ pork so I felt the crispy roasted pork was more appetizing for me.

Again, perfect with a bowl of white rice and some green onion sauce.

Final thoughts

Loewe’s rating: โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ

I am really hovering between 4-5 stars for HK BBQ Master because the bbq meats here are just that good ๐Ÿฅฐ!

The total cost of this meal was cheap. The bowls of rice are $3 each and the green onion sauce maybe another $1 each. For the price, HK BBQ Master is serving up some high quality food in a no-frills environment. In terms of BBQ meat, I think they may still be the best in town ๐Ÿ˜ฎ! I highly recommend everything we tried and I think the BBQ duck over the honey pork next time since it sold out so quickly.

I appreciated being able to dine-in and again, the servers were really nice despite how busy it was, but I think moving forward I would just do take-out since this type of food also travels well and I personally don’t like paying for bowls of rice if I can just go home and make some.

Sincerely, Loewe
