Homer Street Cafe: Happy hour in Yaletown

Homer Street Cafe is a vintage and contemporary restaurant located in a historic building within the Yaletown district. They are known for their rotisserie chicken, but I actually came here to try their happy hour menu.

Since it was a sunny day, we actually sat on their outdoor street patio (it’s a bit farther away from the entrance of the restaurant). They have large green picnic tables and an umbrella to shade you from the sun.

Food and drinks review

Prices are listed in CAD and rounded to the nearest dollar.

Sparkling chardonnay ($29)

When I came here, the drink specials were $2 off cocktails or around $29 for a bottle of wine. We opted for a bottle of sparkling chardonnay!

Steak tartare ($18)

Steak tartare is one of my favourite appies so we ordered this from the happy hour food menu. It comes with some smoked crème fraîche, Farm House clothbound cheddar shaved on top, and tater tots? 🤔

Now I am a potato girlie and I love me some tater tots, but I will say it was kind of weird to pair it with steak tartare. This is mostly because it didn’t do its job very well of holding the steak tartare – I prefer a flat surface like a crostini or even a chip to scoop up the bits of steak tartare.

I did like and notice the smokiness of the creme fraiche and found the cheddar to give it a sharper and stronger taste.

Hickory honey ham ($18)

This was probably my favourite food item that we ordered. The ham is smoked in-house and had a very savoury and meaty taste to it. It sits on a bed of pimento cheese, which is in kind of a dip/spread like form. They sprinkle some dill pickles and serve it with a big baguette.

The baguette was so delicious and you can stack quite a bit of ham on top to get a nice meaty bite. My only complaint is I wish there were more pickles because with the cheese and the ham, it is a pretty salty dish.

Clams and beans

This is no longer on the menu but I’ll include it in this review anyways. It was a small plate of clams, beans and some crispy pork belly skin. The best part of this dish is probably the bits of crispy pork skin, but overall I didn’t think the clams and beans were that amazing (also not a lot of clams).

House fries & aioli ($7)

Lastly, we have the cheapest item on the food menu – some good ol’ fries and aioli. Nothing much to say except that it met my expectations 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Final thoughts

Loewe’s rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Overall, I had a decent happy hour at Homer Street Cafe. They have a lot of cocktails on their happy hour menu + food choices, but nothing really stood out to me except for that smoked ham appetizer. I think compared to other options in the area and the price point, it falls around an average rating.

Sincerely, Loewe
