Hon Sushi: Japanese sushi in Burnaby

Hon Sushi is a Japanese sushi restaurant located in Burnaby. We tried Hon Sushi at a friend’s house during a doggy playdate. This review is based on a takeout experience.

Food

We order takeout for 4 adults:

Potato croquette ($7)

I love potatoes and I love croquettes. I would say this is a pretty standard quality croquette with a nice crispy texture on the outside and soft potatoes on the inside. $7 is a little pricey for this small appetizer but prices are slightly higher on food delivery apps.

Scallop oshi sushi ($15) and Salmon oshi sushi ($15)

Salmon oshi is probably one of my favourite “rolls” even though it’s probably an abominable sight to a real Japanese sushi chef (“You did WHAT to the fish???”). Essentially, aburi and oshi sushi are pressed sushi with some mayo on top that is seared with a flame torch. Usually, the salmon oshi has a middle filling of more salmon meat in the rice part.

I actually really liked the scallop oshi from Hon Sushi. The scallops didn’t fall off the sushi too much and was very flavourful with the mayo.

For 6 pieces, I would say $15 is a pretty reasonable price for oshi sushi.

Japanese chirashi don ($20)

My boyfriend orders the chirashi down, which is a mixed bowl of seafood on top of a bed of rice. Again, it looks like a pretty standard don, similar to the ones you can get at Sushi Town or Sushi California. There are no premium toppings like fatty tuna, uni or ikura.

Final thoughts

Loewe’s rating: ⭐⭐

There are a few more items I didn’t review (because I didn’t have a picture for lol). We ordered a box of fried chicken from them, which is kind of super weird because most Japanese sushi restaurants do not offer Korean style fried chicken. Anyways, we ordered the padak, which is deep fried chicken with green onions for $26. We couldn’t finish all of it but it was definitely Korean fried chicken.

We also ordered some additional basic rolls which I am not going to even bother reviewing – ex. California roll, a random scallop nigiri, a tamago nigiri (wtf bf? y u order dis).

I find Hon Sushi to be quite a basic sushi restaurant with you traditional rolls and entrees. Prices are more on the pricey side but the aburi sushi is exceptionally yummy. They also have random Korean dishes so I assume the restaurant is run by Korean folks.

Not a bad quick takeout choice if you are craving the standard sushi items.

Sincerely, Loewe
