Hong Kong No 1 Chinese restaurant: Chinese restaurant in Burnaby

Hong Kong No 1 Chinese Restaurant is exactly as it sounds. They are a Chinese restaurant specializing in Cantonese cuisine in Burnaby.

This review is based on a take-out experience. For my mom’s birthday, she wanted to try their food.

Food

Lobster on sticky rice ($79)

This was our main dish. Sticky rice is is a glutinous rice wrapped and seasoned in giant bamboo leaves. The rice is sticky while regular cooked rice is more dry and less clumpy. The lobster sticky rice has lobster meat (shells intact) and the rice is seasoned with corn.

It is a pretty giant serving – almost the size of a party tray. We ordered this for 4 adults and had lots of rice leftover (all the lobster was gone). It tasted delicious although $79 is pretty expensive. Their regular menu has it listed cheaper but Ubereats and delivery apps are always more expensive.

Pan fried rice noodle with beef ($19)

This is one of my favourite classic Cantonese dishes. I use it to judge how good a Chinese restaurant is. The dish is quite simple – it is made from stir-frying beef, hor fun (rice noodle) and bean sprouts.

Hong Kong No1’s pan fried rice noodle with beef is quite good and meets my expectations. Again, the serving is large enough for 3-4 people. It’s not too oily (some places make it too oily) and there are big pieces of beef.

Stir-fried green bean with minced pork ($22)

This is also one of my favourite Cantonese dishes. It is a spicy dish but I can still handle it so if you’re afraid of spices, this dish is still ok!

The green beans are cooked well and not rubbery. The spicy sauce soaks up the outside of the beans well and so does the ground pork. Together, it doesn’t feel like a vegetable dish at all.

Final thoughts

We ordered 3 dishes for 4 people and the total came to $153 after tax and tip on Ubereats. We had leftovers for the pan-fried noodles and sticky rice, but we finished the lobster meat and green beans with pork.

Coming from a Chinese family, we don’t order Chinese take out very often because my mom can just cook it lol. But since it’s my mom’s birthday, we didn’t want her to cook.

My parents liked the food and found all the dishes to be authentic. Portions are very generous, as with many Chinese restaurants. I would order from them again as the quality of the food wasn’t affected by the take-out process.

I probably would not order the lobster sticky rice again just because it’s a bit too expensive in my opinion, but their regular menus have a lot of different dinner combinations so I think calling and ordering directly for pick-up might be more bang for your buck.

Sincerely, Loewe
