Hy’s Steakhouse: Happy hour in Whistler

I went on my annual trip to Whistler in December and we checked out Hy’s Steakhouse for their happy hour menu. As you can tell from the name, they are a steakhouse and focus primarily on steaks. We visited their Whistler location, but they also have locations in Vancouver and across Canada.

This review is based on an in-dining experience.

Interior

The interior of Hy’s Steakhouse in Whistler is a very classic elegant feeling. The inside is quite dark/dim for ambiance and we were seated in a comfortable and cushy booth table. Compared to all the snow and cold outside, I was happy to be seated warmly inside.

They also had a live DJ really close to our table, which was kind of fun.

Drinks

There are several drink specials on Hy’s happy hour menu. Feature cocktails (2oz) are $10, hi balls (1oz) are $8, feature red or white wines (6oz) are $9, and local beer (16oz) is $7.

Note: my friend says they should have named their hi balls “Hy balls” (hire him).

Margarita ($10)

I ordered the margarita as it was their featured cocktail of the day. My other friends ordered the old-fashion and negroni. All of them tasted quite strong so you can be sure to get your 2oz worth (lol). The old-fashion actually went down quite smoothly.

Happy hour food

The happy hour special is 30% off all sharing & snacking items from the menu. Happy hour times are weekdays 4-5:30pm and weekends from 3-5:30pm.

Fresh oysters ($19-20)

Regular price for a dozen oysters is around $28 so with 30% off, that’s around $19-20. The oysters are from PEI and were on the larger side. Very fresh and sweet but quite expensive even with the happy hour deal.

Mini lobster, crab and shrimp rolls ($20)

I love lobster rolls so this was a must-order for me. Original price of the lobster rolls are $29.

The lobster, crab and shrimp rolls were really tasty. The bread is super buttery and there was a lot of seafood filling inside these small dinner rolls.

Rigatoni & meatballs ($17)

Our friends ordered the rigatoni & meatballs. Original price for this pasta dish is $24.

They give you quite a lot of meatballs, which is nice because some pasta places give you like 3 meatballs and call it a day lol.

Hy’s prime beef burger ($18)

This is a pretty big burger – we shared between 2 people. Original price for the burger is $25 and we also added $2 for cheese, which is lowkey highway robbery if you ask me. Anyways, we added the cheese and we don’t regret it.

The meat patty is very juicy and tender, a very delicious burger. Fries are also cooked really well to crispy perfection. They also had the cutest little jars of ketchup.

Final thoughts

Loewe’s rating: โญโญโญ

We were full from the items we ordered from the happy hour menu. Out of everything, I think I liked my lobster rolls the most but my other 2 friends liked their pasta and meatballs. The burger was delicious but at the end of the day, it’s not the most amazing burger I’ve ever had in my life.

Service was great. Our server even gave us a mini ketchup because we thought the packaging was so cute – very nice of him.

I actually think that even with the happy hour pricing, it was still too much on the pricey side. I know we are at Whistler and a lot of the restaurants are expensive in general, but I don’t think it was really that good of a deal to come in for happy hour. I actually recommend you come into Hy’s Steakhouse for their regular dinner menu and get one of their signature steaks, the caesar salad and the cheesy bread for the real Hy’s experience.

Sincerely, Loewe
