Jeng Dau One Cafe: Cheap HK cafe in Richmond food court

Every day I am closer to turning into my parents. And by this, I mean spending my weekend morning at loud, crowded food courts in Richmond.

It’s funny writing this review because I am actually confused as to what this restaurant is 😵‍💫. There are a lot of HK cafes around Richmond and Burnaby and their food court stalls look similar with the green and red menu. The menu and prices are also very similar. I am not sure if they are a larger chain or not.

But today I am reviewing the Jeng Dau One Cafe located inside Empire Center in Richmond. I came here for brunch with my parents and husband to check out their HK style breakfast sets.

The vibe

This is a food court and it delivers on that. Everything is open seating, casual, and you may end up sitting next to strangers because it can get busy during mealtimes. The ambiance itself is pretty self-explanatory and it’s not a romantic or luxurious experience, but it is authentic and there is definitely a community here inside this small mall.

My only advice is take a good look at the menu and only line up when you are ready to order. There is little patience for waiting here.

Food and drinks review

This is everything we ordered to share between 4 adults. Prices are in CAD and rounded to the nearest dollar for simplicity.

Satay beef breakfast set ($13)

The OG classic! For those who have never eaten at a HK cafe before, I highly recommend this breakfast set if you are unsure of what to order.

For an affordable $13, you get a big bowl of satay beef with noodles (we chose macaroni but you can also choose vermicelli, spaghetti, rice noodle, or instant noodle +$0.50). This is good to share between 2 people and I liked the flavour of the satay beef – it is saucy and smoky and mixes well with the broth 👍.

The set also comes with eggs (recommendation: get them scrambled) and bread. We got the bun but I would prefer the toast as it’s more sturdy to hold the egg and I like the crunch/toastiness more. Lastly, it also comes with a drink which you should choose between a HK style milk tea or HK style lemon tea.

Kaya french toast ($8) + Red bean ice ($4)

As a child, my favourite food was HK french toast 😍! This is my first time trying Kaya french toast, but it essentially is the same except they slather on kaya and not just butter or condensed milk.

I actually liked this version better as it wasn’t as sweet or oily. We shared this french toast between 4 people!

My dad liked the red bean drink but I am not a fan of red bean. It can be added onto the french toast for $4, but on its own it is $6.

Chicken wings with fries ($9) + HK lemon tea ($2)

There is something delicious about HK style fried chicken wings and french fries. It’s kinda like Costco fries. For $9, you get 3 wings and a small portion of fries. Add on another $2 for a cold drink and we chose hot lemon tea.

Pan-fried pork chop in black pepper spaghetti ($15)

The last item we ordered was this pork stir-fry. It was surprisingly good and had some good “wok-hay” to it!

For $15, portion is generous and we were not able to finish this with all our other food items. My mom packed this for her lunch the next day.

Final thoughts

Loewe’s rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

We had a yummy and affordable brunch at Jeng Dau in Richmond. Between 4 adults, we shared 4 dishes and 3 drinks and the total came to around $51 = $13 per person before tax or tip 🙌. Note they are cash or debit only.

The food is definitely authentic and service was relatively quick even though there was constantly a short line in front of this stall. It was definitely the most popular vendor in this food court.

I recommend their all-day breakfast sets the most with my favourite being the satay beef. This one is probably #2 or #3 in my rankings, with Cha Kee in Richmond still being my all-time favourite for satay beef breakfast sets.

My next favourite item we ordered was the Kaya french toast. Kids will definitely enjoy this one and it’s good for the whole fam.

Sincerely, Loewe
