Jimmy’s Lunch Box: Brunch in Port Coquitlam

Jimmy’s Lunch Box is a brunch restaurant in Port Coquitlam. All their staff seem to be Korean and their cuisine is considered fusion, but you will see a lot of brunch classics such as chicken waffles, eggs bennies and more.

This review is based on a number of in-dining experiences prior to COVID-19.

Interior

The interior is very cute and stylish. They have a semi-open kitchen so you can kind of see the chefs in there cooking behind their display of pasta jars.

They have limited booth/table seating and a row of bar seating near the window. The booth seating is much more comfortable than the bar seating, but it’s kind of cool to be facing the window and people watch. On weekends, expect a wait of 30 minutes or more.

Food

Jimmy’s Lunch Box offers a variety of brunch items. This includes breakfast dishes but also normal lunch dishes like soups and sandwiches, fish & chips, etc.

Pulled pork skillet ($16)

This was the first item I ever tried from Jimmy’s Lunch Box. The skillet contains a lot of goodies – slow roasted pulled pork, roasted sweet potatoes, caramelized onions, 2 poached eggs, hollandaise sauce and bbq sauce, pickled cabbage and cheese.

There is a lot of food in this skillet so I hope you are a hungry person. The pulled pork is soft and flavourful and I love how the poached eggs and sauces ooze over the potatoes. The caramelized onions are a great addition.

The first bites of this skillet was amazing, but I did find there to be too much hollandaise sauce in the end. So if you are not a big fan of hollandaise sauce, you can ask them to put less on.

Corned beef skillet ($14)

I try this skillet the next time because the pulled pork skillet had too much sauce on it. Instead of poached eggs, the corned beef skillet comes with 2 sunny side up eggs.

Again, portion size is quite large. There is a lot of corned beef in this skillet! I found it to be better than the pulled pork skillet because there wasn’t too much sauce.

California benny ($15)

We’ve tried several of their eggs benny but we like their california benny the most. It comes with bacon, English muffin, avocado, tomato and 2 poached eggs in hollandaise sauce. There is also a pan-fried potato hash.

The only difference between the california benny and the other benny is the use of avocados. But their English muffin is still crunchy (not soggy!) and the potato hash is really yummy with the tomatoes.

Smoked salmon benny ($16)

Here we have the smoked salmon benny, which looks almost identical to the California benny in my pictures lol. Again, the only main difference is that they use smoked salmon instead of an avocado. Other things they add is cream cheese and pickled cauliflower.

My boyfriend didn’t really like the use of cream cheese.

Chicken n waffles ($16)

This is my favourite menu item because I am a sucker for fried chicken. Their chicken and waffles are delicious and on par with brunch places in downtown Vancouver.

Portion size is a little small compared to the skillets, but you still get at least 2 large pieces of fried chicken on that seemingly small waffle.

Waffle is always crispy, never soggy and the fried chicken thighs are always crunchy and filled with that yummy buttermilk flavour. They actually make their Belgian waffles in house so that is a big plus.

They throw in a sunny egg, some pickled cabbage and maple syrup and viola – you get your perfect savoury and sweet breakfast dish.

Final thoughts

I am a big fan of Jimmy’s Lunch Box in Port Coquitlam. There are not many fabulous brunch places in Port Coquitlam and I find myself going all the way downtown to line up 1 hour for Jam Cafe lol. Now that I have found Jimmy’s Lunch Box, I am happy to find a great place closer to me. In fact, I would say their brunch items are on par with other brunch places downtown.

Portions are generous so I am always super full when I leave Jimmy’s. Out of everything I tried, I like the chicken and waffles the most and I do think the skillets are bang for your buck because of how much food you get. Prices are reasonable for the quality of food – I estimate at least $15 per person if you want a basic eggs benny.

If you are in the Port Coquitlam area, please check out this hidden gem!

Sincerely, Loewe
