Lunitas Mexican Eatery: Taco Lunch in Gibsons

I go to Gibsons/Sunshine Coast maybe once a year and this is my favourite Mexican restaurant on the island!

Lunitas Mexican Eatery is a fun and casual Mexican restaurant located on Gibsons landing and right on the water so you get a cool view of the harbour. We came here for lunch and here is our experience.

The vibe

I’ve eaten at Lunitas once before and we were seated inside. The building is really cool and painted in lots of colours and the inside is no different – colourful walls and lots of indoor-outdoor windows and doors opened so you get fresh air and the view.

For lunch, only their patio area is open so we were not able to sit indoors even though we wanted to. It was quite hot that day so we tried to find the best patio table with the most shade from the umbrellas, but overall it was very sunny and hot πŸ₯΅. Patio dining was not as comfortable also due to the wired/netted patio chairs and tables.

You order at the counter yourself and pick up your own food when your number is called out so it’s more self-served and you also get your own water.

Food review

Lunitas has a small lunch menu and here is everything we ordered to share between 2 people. Prices are in CAD and rounded to the nearest dollar for simplicity.

Chips and guacamole ($12)

I am a guac girl and honestly I had been eating guac all weekend 🀭 so maybe I would have enjoyed this more if I hadn’t already been eating guac every day. Anyways, the guac was good and for $12, I think the bucket of chips is a reasonable amount.

Esquites ($9)

I love love street corn so I was pretty excited to see this on the menu. This is street corn in a cup, essentially! The corn is mixed with chili garlic aioli, feta cheese, cilantro and lime juice – tangy, sweet and yummy! Despite the photo, the cup can hold quite a bit of corn.

Carnita and Agave lime chicken taco ($6 each)

If you don’t want a burrito bowl, your other option for “mains” would be tacos. The tacos looked pretty small as they are on 4″ soft tortillas, so we ordered 2 each.

Out of the two, I preferred the carnita taco – it had pulled pork, chipotle crema, onions, cilantro, cabbage, and feta. The pulled pork was saucy and despite its small size, they packed quite a bit of meat in there.

The agave lime chicken taco also tasted good despite how it looked – I felt like it looked like a pile of mud. It is served with some salsa verde, toasted pepitas, cabbage and pickled onion.

Final thoughts

Loewe’s rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

We had a fast and yummy lunch at Lunitas Mexican Eatery. Their lunch menu is quite limited but I feel like they truly optimized this menu because everything on the menu uses similar ingredients (tacos and burrito ingredients are essentially the same), + the guac and salsa and chips are also used in the mains. A pretty smart move 🧐!

When it comes to tacos, I can’t say the chicken or pulled pork tacos are my go-to (I usually like to order fish taco and maybe an al pastor taco), so I would say the tacos are quite good since I these are fillings I don’t usually like to order. The corn was also a must-get too although I have ordered the street corn off their dinner menu and it was on a cob (more expensive) and I liked that version more.

I think if the lunch menu had more choices, this can easily be a 4 star review.

Service wise, there’s not much to comment because it is pretty casual and self-serve. I find sometimes on the island restaurants will close for several days in the week (weekdays) and only open on the weekends so it’s nice to find a spot that is open for lunch every day.

If it was less hot and we could dine inside and not be under the sun, we would have been more comfortable. I think we will come back for dinner service another time!

Sincerely, Loewe
