Malay Curry House: Malaysian takeout in Burnaby
Malay Curry House is a Malaysian food court stand in Crystal Mall. I was craving Malaysian food one day so we decided to give this place a try. This review is based on a takeout experience.
Food
Malaysian roti ($5)
This is one of my favourite Malaysian appetizers. Roti is actually a type of chewy Indian bread and you dip it into curry usually.
I wasn’t the biggest fan of the curry dip that came with this roti. I found it to have a lot of minced veggies or garlic or something, it felt very grainy. You can also choose to have it with a peanut sauce instead of the curry sauce.
House special laksa ($12)
I was really craving for laksa a couple of weeks ago. Laksa is a spicy noodle soup with thick wheat noodles or rice vermicelli with chicken, prawn or fish, served in spicy soup based on either rich and spicy curry coconut milk.
For my add-on, I chose fishcakes because I thought it would soak up all that laksa flavour. The laksa broth was good but just a tad bit too spicy for me (good heat). If you really can’t handle any spice, they have a “white/non-spicy” version of the laksa broth as well.
Portions were big and I couldn’t finish my bowl of laksa noodles. It comes with other types of fish balls and veggies. Noodles were not soggy.
Beef brisket curry ($12)
Similar to the curry dip in the roti, the beef brisket curry also has a lot of this minced texture. The curry is not smooth and creamy like an Indian curry. I’m not sure if this is how Malaysian curry just is, but I wasn’t the biggest fan.
The beef brisket was cooked well so it was soft and tender. The curry comes with a bowl of rice.
Boneless Hainanese chicken rice combo ($12)
The Hainanese chicken rice combo comes with rice and soup, whereas just the Haianese chicken rice comes without the rice. The rice is not white rice, but “oil rice”, which is the correct pairing for Hainanese chicken.
The soup is just meh.
They also gave all 3 sauces (red spicy sauce, soy sauce and a green sauce) which tasted great and authentic. The Hainanese chicken was good but I felt the portions were slightly smaller than other places in terms of how many pieces of chicken you get. Aside from that, great flavours but not as good as Aberdeen’s food court lol.
Final thoughts
Overall, I think this place is a good deal because of the amount of food you get. $12 for a dinner is quite cheap pre entree. In total, we spent $47 for 2 people after tax, tip and service fees. Of course, if you’re not ordering delivery it would not add up to this.
Out of everything, I liked my laksa noodles the most and I would not mind ordering the Hainanese chicken again for its price. Malay Curry House is a quick & easy food court stall with basic Malaysian dishes.
Sincerely, Loewe
