Memory Corner: Taiwanese restaurant in Richmond

Memory Corner is a Taiwanese restaurant located in Richmond. They also have a sister restaurant called Sweet Memory, also located in Richmond. We came here to check out their super cool interior decor and to also try some authentic Taiwanese food. This review is based on an in-dining experience.

Interior

The interior for Memory Corner is really cool. They made it look like you are eating outside on the street/at a food stall vendor in old time Taiwan. They patch up all the windows and it really feels like you are transported back in time to a different place.

I really enjoyed looking around and the atmosphere of the restaurant. Seating is not super comfortable because it’s like wooden stools (no back support) but it adds to the whole theme so I didn’t mind too much.

Food and drinks

This is what we ordered for 2 people.

Potted milk tea ($7)

We had a hard time deciding what drink to order because they have a wide selection of bubble tea drinks. We decided to go with a potted milk tea, although we really had no idea what it would be like (the server couldn’t explain it very well). We expected it to be in an actual pot, but it was given to us in a normal cup with some chocolate cookie crumbs on top to make it look like it was potted? Idk. I think it would have been cooler if it was served hot in an actual teapot.

Taiwanese meat sauce on rice ($11)

I usually don’t order this dish because it is very simple, but I saw a lot of good reviews on their Taiwanese meat sauce on rice so we decided to order it as it as a favourite/classic item from their menu. The bowl is medium sized (not too big and not too small) and has a boiled egg and meat sauce over a bed of rice. Now usually, I am not very impressed with this dish, but Memory Corner’s was really good!

The meat sauce was super flavourful and not dry at all. Compared to many other Taiwanese restaurants where this dish is offered as a side/rice replacement, Memory Corner’s is way better. If I was here for lunch alone, I would definitely order this.

Taiwanese deep-fried crispy chicken fried rice ($15)

I gotta try the chicken nuggets at Taiwanese restaurants because usually they are bomb and if you failed at making those crispy chicken nugs, then you’re probably not a very good Taiwanese restaurant. We order the chicken nuggets with fried rice and it is a big bowl!

Nuggets were good but not extraordinary (pretty average and on par with other places we’ve been to). The fried rice is cooked really well. I feel like they must have used a wok or something because the dryness/heat of the rice is really good (not oily or wet).

Taiwanese pork floss egg rolls ($11)

Another classic Taiwanese appetizer. They have different versions of this egg roll with green onion, bacon and egg, but the staple one is pork floss. The egg roll is wrapped nicely and is loaded pork floss inside. I didn’t really like the plum sauce that came with it, but aside from that, it was good.

Final thoughts

Loewe’s rating: โญโญโญโญ

We really enjoyed our lunch at Memory Corner and we feel like it ticked off all the boxes we are looking for in a Taiwanese restaurant. The food is authentic, menu is diverse (they have hotpots, noodle soups, rice, etc.) so there can be something for everyone.

Highlight is definitely the interior, which is super cool. Food highlight would definitely be that meat sauce on rice – so simple but they executed it so well and made it such a star dish.

The only thing to note is that their dessert menu is not as good as their sister restaurant’s menu, so the 2 restaurants do offer slightly different items.

Sincerely, Loewe
