Michi Craft Kitchen: Asian fusion restaurant in Burnaby/Vancouver

Michi Craft Kitchen is an Asian fusion restaurant highlighting Cantonese/Chinese cuisine with 2 locations – 1 in Burnaby/Vancouver on Kingsway and 1 in downtown Vancouver on Robson.

I visited the Kingsway location for lunch to check out their signature dish – stuffed chicken wings!

The vibe

The interior of Michi Craft Kitchen is not very big but it’s got a cool retro vibe. They feature a lot of old-school Cantonese movie posters and also played Cantonese/Chinese music. It made me think perhaps my parents would like this kind of nostalgia.

Tables and chairs are wooden and for the small space, there’s still a decent amount of tables that can fit larger groups (4+ people).

Food and drinks review

Here is everything we ordered. Prices are in CAD and rounded to the nearest dollar for simplicity.

HK style milk tea with bear ($6)

I saw this drink on the menu and thought it was so cute I had to try it. It’s a Hong Kong style milk tea in the same of a bear 😍!

The bear is more like a frozen condensed form of it, and you pour the milk tea into the cup. I felt it was quite strong and sweet, but I liked the novelty of it. I would recommend trying it once, but $6 for a HK milk tea is a little overpriced in my opinion.

Stuffed chicken wings ($7 per wing)

So Michi Craft Kitchen is known for their stuffed chicken wings and their menu boasts 6 different wings you can choose from + a spicy crawfish version instead of a regular chicken wing. From the 6 options, we chose to try 3:

  • Original fried rice: This is the original flavour so we had to get it. The chicken wing is stuffed with fried rice and deboned so that it is easy to eat (I appreciate that 😌). Portion size is actually larger than your average wing so it can be quite filling.
  • Cheesy corn: I had high hopes for this one but it wasn’t as cheesy as I hoped it would be. The corn adds some sweetness to the stuffing, which was nice.
  • Cumin lamb fried rice: My least favourite one out of the 3 but I don’t like lamb so I can’t say I set myself up for success. The fried rice stuffing is similar to the original one, except it has a tad bit of cumin spice flavour.

Overall, I thought the stuffed wings were interesting and fun to eat, and since they are all stuffed with rice it is actually quite filling/reasonably priced. What would make it more yummy is if the chicken meat was more moist.

Curry fishballs ($8)

Curry fishballs are a popular snack for Cantonese folks and I liked the presentation of these ones from Michi Craft Kitchen. $8 is an ok price for curry fishballs and you get 12 in total. The curry sauce itself was decent and the fishballs were soft and soaked up that sauce.

Omelette rice with tomato beef stew ($17)

This is a fusion between Japanese and Chinese food. We ordered this omelette rice to essentially fill us up as the main carb to end the meal.

I quite liked the tomato and beef sauce/stew – slightly sweet and comforting. It is definitely the taste Cantonese people like (think of HK style spaghetti). The egg and rice makes it quite a hearty dish and good to share too.

Final thoughts

Loewe’s rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

We had a decent lunch at Michi Craft Kitchen and enjoyed the nods to Cantonese culture and flavours since we are also Cantonese. Overall, I think the food is decent but nothing really stood out to me as a must-return to eat.

Out of everything, the stuffed chicken wings were the most interesting so I would recommend you to check out Michi if you are interested in this specific dish. Other items you can find in other places.

Sincerely, Loewe
