Myst Asian Fusion Restaurant: Taiwanese takeout in Burnaby
Myst is an Asian Fusion restaurant in Burnaby. They have a very extensive menu with hundreds of menu items and different combos, all at reasonable prices! Most of their food is Taiwanese but they offer everything from fried rices, stir fried noodles, noodle soups, hot pot – even bubble tea!
I’ve eaten in Myst many times, but I find Myst an especially attractive choice as a take-out restaurant so this review will be a mixture of takeout and in-dining pictures and comments.
Interior
The interior of Myst is very spacious. They can seat large or small tables very quickly and service in general is very fast. It is kind of dark with colourful lights so I consider it more of a teen hot spot. They are also open late into the AMs so perfect for late night snacking.
Parking lot can be tricky at Myst because there are not as many spots as they have dining. It can also be tricky to pull in/leave the lot, especially if you drive a larger car. Luckily, you can also park at many of the residential streets for free.
Appetizers
Deep fried squid tentacles ($9)
Okay these are #1. They are as yummy as the ones you can get from Richmond Night Market – deep fried so well! Even if you order takeout, it stays crunchy and chewy with lots of salty peppery flavour (if you eat a lot at Taiwanese restaurants, you’ll know what I mean by “salty peppery” lol).
I always get these and highly recommend you to share or add it to your main dish as a combo.
Taiwanese egg roll ($7)
This is a traditional Taiwanese appetizer. It’s called an egg roll but it’s more like a crepe roll because they use a thin crepe and egg to roll it up. The original version comes with pork floss, some sort of sliced meat, scallions and sweet chili sauce.
You can also order different variations with cheese, ham, bacon or corn.
Marinated cucumber with garlic ($7)
This is a simple appetizer and is exactly what the menu item describes it to be. This is a cold dish and the cucumber is refreshing and flavourful because of the garlic. A great appetizer choice if you ordered heavier/greasy dishes.
Mains
Beef noodle soup ($13)
Myst’s classic beef noodle soup is one of their most popular menu items. It is also a staple Taiwanese dish. The red braised beef is very tender and comes in large chunks. The soup base is beef broth and they also throw in vegetables and a hunk of Chinese noodle.
We usually order normal spicy and thick noodles, but you can choose to have spicy on the side and like 10 different types of noodles. Thick noodles are the classic way to go!
The takeout version was not disappointing and tasted just as yummy as the ones we’ve had in the restaurant. They separate the broth and noodles so they do not get soggy, but once you mix it all in, it tastes just the same.
Chef’s special egg fried rice, salty peppery flavour ($15)
Another salty peppery description lol. This is my favourite fried rice from Myst. The fried rice has a mixture of ingredients, including prawns, tofu, scallions and egg.
The portion size of this fried rice is very big – I can never finish it alone. If you are a very hungry big guy then maybe.
Japanese style omu fried rice ($16)
What makes this fried rice Japanese is the bonito flakes, seaweed and Japanese mayo. The fried rice itself contains fish, imitation crab and shrimp.
Again, it’s a huge portion. Presentation is beautiful for a takeout fried rice – it looks exactly as it would if I order it in the restaurant.
House special meat sauce with noodle ($9)
This is a pretty basic noodle dish but it’s part of their mix & match combo A+B selection (you get to choose a main and an appetizer). This is a dry noodle dish and the sauce is mostly the minced meat sauce.
Again, portion size is big and I usually choose the squid tentacles as my appetizer.
Final thoughts
In the photo above, we ordered takeout for 4 people with 2 bubble tea drinks. The total after tax & tip came to around $95 and we were stuffed.
Myst Asian Fusion Restaurant is a casual favourite because it simply has so many items on their menu. Whether you are vegetarian, meat lover, dessert freak, deep-fried foods addict, hot pot maniac or a bubble tea fanatic, Myst has something right for you.
They do only take debit and cash in the restaurant, but with takeout they accept credit cards. Super easy and convenient to order online during covid-19 even if you don’t live in the Burnaby area. They have group ordering days for those living in Vancouver and Richmond.
Deciding to eat or order from Myst isn’t an issue. I think the issue you will all have is deciding what to order!
Sincerely, Loewe
