Singapore Hawker: Malaysian laksa take-out in Coquitlam
Singapore Hawker is a Singapore/Malaysian restaurant located in Coquitlam. They have a diverse menu of different laska noodles, curries and fried rice and noodles.
We order takeout from Singapore Hawker due to COVID-19 so this review will only be based on their takeout food and menu.
Appetizers
Roti Canai ($4.50)
Roti is a type of bread from India that is chewy and flaky. You may be surprised to hear Indian influences for a review on a Singaporean restaurant, but this appetizer is actually quite common in Malaysia. The roti is served with a curry dip.
For takeout, this appetizer turned out pretty good! The bread is not as flaky as it would be dining in (I assume). It is more on the chewy side.
Mains
Boneless Hainanese Chicken on Rice ($14)
This dish consists of tender boneless chicken served with a side of oil rice. They have different sauces for you to dip your chicken in – sweet chili, ginger shallot oil and a sweet soya sauce. This combo also comes with a small soup.
My favourite Hainanese chicken rice is actually from the Aberdeen food court in Richmond (lol). Although this one from Singapore Hawker is not as good, it may be one of the best in Coquitlam. The chicken meat is tender and boneless, but it’s not the best quality chicken.
Malaysian Curry Laksa ($14)
My dad chose this laksa noodle – Malaysian curry laksa. Laksa is a spicy noodle soup, popular in southeast Asia. Singapore Hawker’s Malaysian curry laksa is mild so if you can’t eat spicy, you can still try this! It’s more sweet with a light kick.
They separate the egg noodles and the prawns from the rest of the soup base. The soup base has tofu puffs, fish cake and fish balls. This makes the noodles not soggy.
I actually quite enjoyed this noodle dish even though I don’t eat laksa very often. However, you may find it too oily if you eat it all alone. I think in general, laksa can be very oily so I don’t think it’s necessarily Singapore Hawker’s fault.
Kari Lembu ($17)
This is a Malaysian curry with beef briskets and potatoes. It does not come with a rice but we had rice at home so we just ordered the curry.
This one is spicier than the laksa noodles. I could only eat one serving of this, but the beef brisket is very tender! It’s very similar to Hong Kong style beef brisket curry (but spicier). The potatoes are cooked really well and seasoned (not just dumped in with the rest of the items).
Final review
We will try Singapore Hawker again but I’m not sure we’ll be dine-in guests. This is not because of COVID-19. My mom’s friend did pick-up and she had to wait 30 minutes to get her food even though she arrived at the time they told her to. This makes me think perhaps their kitchen is a little slow as a newly opened restaurant.
We ordered via SkiptheDishes, but one thing to point out is that I notice their SkiptheDishes prices are slightly higher than the prices listed on their website. For accuracy, this blog post uses my SkiptheDishes prices. In total, I spent $60 after tax and tip for all the food and delivery and it fed 4 adults with no leftovers.
In terms of food, it’s not bad at all. I’m not Malaysian or Singaporean, but I am told by Malaysians that the food is quite authentic. However, their authenticity and cuisine leans more towards Malaysian than Singaporean.
Sincerely, Loewe
