Sun Sun Warung: Local Balinese restaurant in Ubud
Sun Sun Warung is a popular and super cheap restaurant located in Ubud, Bali. They serve up traditional Balinese cuisine and is family run. We came here to eat as a group of 4 adults and did encounter a wait time of around 20-30 minutes during our trip to Bali in April.
The interior of Sun Sun is pretty cool because after you go up the stairs and enter a gate, it’s like you’re in someone’s backyard. There are mini pavilions with low table seating where you sit on the ground, but we were seated in an area with normal height tables and chairs. We did need to remove our shoes before stepping into this area to eat.
Food and drinks review
Here’s everything we ordered at Sun Sun Warung. Some of the items were ordered by my friends so I may not comment on how it tasted, but at least you can see how it looks!
Note that all prices have been converted from IDR to CAD and then rounded to the nearest dollar.
Pineapple and papaya juice ($2 each)
They were out of mango juice so I opted for papaya. It didn’t taste as good as I hoped it would and the consistency was thick. Aside from that, it was refreshing and it came in a large cup. The pineapple juice tasted better.
Nasi campur ($4)
Can we take a moment to appreciate that this costs $4 😭. It’s a beautiful platter of small appetizers and a bowl of rice. The appetizers include chicken, tempe (fermented soybeans), tofu, egg, deep fried corn, two satay, vegetables and sambal matah. Honestly, this is enough for a meal for one person.
It is plated so beautifully and it’s really fun to mix and match the different items and pair it with the rice. My favourite was the deep fried corn, the veggies and the chicken (tender!).
They had a version of this with blue rice that we tried to order but it was also sold out.
Bihun goreng ayam ($4)
This is a fried vermicelli dish with small dried chicken, two satay, veggies and a fried egg. This one was really good! I felt like the fried vermicelli had some good “wok hay” (if you are Cantonese and know what I mean). There’s a lot of good flavour and the balance is nice.
Kare ayam ($4)
This is a chicken curry with veggies and steamed rice. The curry is pretty similar to Thai curry so if you are a fan of the yellow or green Thai curry, you will probably like this one also as it uses coconut milk.
Ayam goreng asam manis ($2)
This is more of a side dish, but it is fried chicken with a sweet and sour sauce. For a small bowl, they still pack around 6-8 pieces of fried chicken in here and the sauce is reminiscent of Chinese sweet & sour sauce. Again, $2 everyone 😭.
Kangkung goreng ($2)
So one of my friends always makes sure to order a vegetable dish, which is why it has made it into this post because I probably would not have ordered this dish. It’s fried water spinach with Balinese spices and I’m not sure if it’s because I don’t eat a lot of veggies in general, but this little side dish felt so healthy and yummy. It’s got a nice garlicky flavour and it is not spicy.
Lumpia goreng ($2)
We also order a side of spring rolls with veggies and a peanut sauce. The spring rolls were kind of just average to me, but there was nothing wrong with them.
Pisang goreng ($2)
Kelvin loves deep fried bananas so he was very satisfied with this dessert. The bananas are fried well with the batter on the outside giving it a crunch, and the sweet and soft banana on the inside. Pair it with the vanilla ice cream for a classic combo.
Dadar gulung ($2)
This dessert is a crepe with palm sugar and coconut stuffing. I really liked this because it had a fun green colour on the outside due to pandan extract. It is a good amount of sweetness and the whole roll has a chewy texture to it. Really yummy and light.
Final thoughts
Loewe’s rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
So I don’t know if you noticed, but literally nothing we ordered was over $4 CAD. That is so crazy!
Everything was delicious, beautifully plated and had a good balance to it. Must get items is the nasi campur with all the different small appetizers – good to try lots of small dishes! I also think their fried vermicalli dish also tasted better than other places we’ve tried the same dish. The fried bananas and the crepe are also must-gets.
And honestly, since everything is less than $4… you might as well get everything. The prices make this place even more extraordinary.
Sun Sun Warung is the type of restaurant that would be a perfect stop for tourists. This is because the food is traditional and local – when you are traveling to Bali, I’m sure you are curious to try some Balinese dishes, which Sun Sun has an abundance of. The ambiance is super cool and you really feel like you are in Bali when you are eating here. So Sun Sun Warung is a must-visit in Ubud and worth the wait for sure!
Sincerely, Loewe
