Sushi Modo: Casual sushi spot in Port Moody and Burnaby

I am a big sushi lover and eat it regularly. Sometimes I’m feeling fancy and will pay $$$ for sushi, and other times, I am looking for something more lowkey and affordable.

Sushi Modo is one of the casual Japanese and sushi restaurants that I’ve tried with 2 locations in South Burnaby and Port Moody. They offer the basics like sashimi, nigiri, special rolls and fried items.

I was invited to visit their Port Moody location for the first time (I’ve only eaten at their Burnaby location) and here is how my experience went.

The vibe

I am familiar with the building Sushi Modo is in as I used to live in the Tri-cities. There is free parking available in the lot and the restaurant is a medium sized facility that can seat quite a few number of tables (mostly small 2-4 seats).

There are a lot of dividers in the dining space so you will feel privacy at your table and many of them have a window seat/view.

Food review

Disclaimer: We were offered $80 worth of food as part of an Instagram collab, but as usual, I will include my honest review and opinions. I have included the prices in this review for your info. Prices are in CAD and rounded to the nearest dollar for simplicity.

Salmon sashimi ($18/6pcs)

Salmon sashimi is my go-to when figuring out if a casual sushi restaurant has good quality fish. Sushi Modo offers salmon sashimi 6 pcs for $17.50. The pieces are decently thick so I was pretty happy with that and it tasted quite fresh also.

Appetizer tempura ($12)

The appetizer tempura is also something I like to order when sharing with another person. It comes with 2 prawn tempura and 4pcs of veggies like green bean, broccoli, squash and yam.

The tempura pieces were all fried well (not soggy or greasy) and I actually liked the broccoli tempura a lot because it tasted roasted inside.

Salmon aburi sushi ($5 each)

The aburi (seared) salmon nigiri sushis are $4.50 each. These nigiri sushi are pretty large and it took me 2 bites to finish one. It was seared nicely with a thick cut of salmon and some onions on top.

Spider roll ($16)

They have a lot of special rolls to choose from and there are also photos on their ipad/digital ordering system. Out of all the rolls, the spider roll caught our eye. Inside, the roll has avocado, cucumber, crab meat and soft shell crab. On the outside, the sprinkle a lot of fried yams or crunchy bits on top and drizzle on sauces (a little spicy!).

This roll was huge and each piece could barely fit in my mouth (fyi I have a big mouth 😅). It was quite good and I liked the crunchy bits for texture.

Salmon kama ($10)

Salmon kama is salmon neck and this part is grilled and drizzled with teriyaki sauce. We actually like to order this dish at a lot of sushi restaurants because we think it’s a big value! You get quite a lot of meat even though it’s just the neck part, and the meat is so moist and juicy!

You may have to pick at it a little with your chopsticks though.

Tobiko hotate oshi sushi ($18)

Lastly, we got a pressed sushi roll to end our meal. Since we ate a lot of salmon already, we tried their hotate (scallop) roll with some tobiko (fish eggs) on top. This tasted quite good but the rice did fall apart slightly.

Final thoughts

Loewe’s rating: ⭐⭐⭐

We had a pretty good dinner at Sushi Modo in Port Moody. Everything tasted good and I think prices are somewhat reasonable, although they may be $1-2 more than your average casual sushi restaurant. I would order everything we tried again as it all tasted to be decent quality and food portions. My only side note is that for the special roll and oshi roll, some of the pieces did fall apart when I picked it up with my chopsticks (didn’t stay together that well).

Service was not bad and food came out quickly.

Sincerely, Loewe
