Sushi no Musashi: Revolving sushi restaurant inside Kyoto Station

I had quite a list of foods to try during my Japan Honeymoon trip and one of the things was to eat at a revolving sushi restaurant. Note that this is separate from omakase or just a regular sushi restaurant. I think there’s a lot of fun in the revolving ones 😝!

We ended up eating at a revolving sushi counter-style restaurant at Sushi no Musashi. This restaurant is actually located inside Kyoto Station (near the Hachijo entrance) and it was just the easiest option to eat here before our train ride departed. Here is how our lunch experience went!

The vibe

There wasn’t really a line when we entered Sushi no Musashi and we only waited a few minutes to be seated. There was an area to the side where you can leave your luggage inside the restaurant and we felt safe and comfortable with our luggage being there. There was a line, however, when we left.

The restaurant only had counter seating and it was kind of like a big square or U shape where everyone faces the conveyer belt. Several chefs and cooks work in the middle, non-stop making small plates of sushi and placing it onto the belt.

We are seated in individual bar chairs but it has back support and I felt comfortable. You can also dispense your own tea at the counter and it has all the things you need to begin your meal.

In the back of the room, there is a “menu” of different coloured plates. This is how they calculate your bill – each plate is a different colour and has a different price tag associated with it. At the end of the meal, the server scans your plates and will automatically calculate how much your bill is.

Food review

We kinda went ham here 😂 and we didn’t pay much attention to how much eat plate costs because we are on vacation. In total, we finished 13 plates in total between 2 people and our total was around $50 CAD.

My husband and I kind of had differing views on our plate strategy. He thinks the best bang for your book are the cheaper plates ($1-3) but I much preferred the plates that were around $4+. Each plate comes with 2 sushi so it’s easy to share with 2 people as you each get 1 piece.

My favourite nigiris include:

  • Tuna (just regular, not bluefin tuna or anything fancy)
  • Any one of them that comes with a quail egg
  • Spot prawn/amaebi
  • Hotate/big scallop – sweet!
  • Salmon – actually decent! But BC has better salmon
  • Unagi/ eel

I felt most of the sushi was fresh and good and each plate can be quite filling with the rice. There were certainly some interesting sushis on the belt, things like horse meat or fish drenched in mayo or cheese 🫨 (perhaps more for foreigners?). I recommend you to try what you want!

Final thoughts

Loewe’s rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Our lunch at Sushi no Musashi wasn’t cheap as it ended up being around $25 per person, but I think this is the joy in conveyer belt sushi spots.

Based on your budget, you can certainly eat less plates or choose more simple/basic sushi, but it’s fun to just grab what you want as it passes by!

I think the quality was not bad but definitely not as good as other or more specialized sushi restaurants. For something inside Kyoto Station that is so busy, this was a pretty fun, simple and quick experience.

Sincerely, Loewe
