Sushi Umi: Sushi take-out in West Vancouver
Sushi Umi is a Japanese sushi restaurant located in West Van. They do not have a website but you can find them listed on popular delivery apps such as Uber Eats, Doordash, Skipthedishes and more.
This review is based off of a take-out experience. We had 6 hungry friends so we ordered a variety of items!
Appetizers
Chicken karaage ($8)
I love me some fried chicken! Chicken karaage is Japanese fried chicken and 1 order from Sushi Umi comes with 7 pieces. I am used to a mayo sauce to accompany chicken karaage, but they gave us a different sweet & sour sauce instead.
Chicken karaage is fried well and the pieces are big and juicy inside. Not soggy at all from take-out.
Prawn tempura ($8)
Does ordering prawn tempura at sushi restaurants qualify as a guilty pleasure? I usually try not to order tempura because it’s actually really cheap to make yourself but who makes tempura at home lol this argument is not really relevant.
Sushi Umi’s prawn tempura is quite large so that is already a plus in my books. One order comes with 10 pieces. Again, fried really well!
Sushi rolls
We have a friend who doesn’t like mayo so we let him order a basic dynamite roll and smoked salmon roll. I won’t include in this review because it’s too basic (lol).
Spider roll ($12)
The spider roll has soft shell crab, crab meat, avocado, cucumber, and masago with barbeque sauce. One order comes with six pieces.
It’s a smaller roll but each piece is quite big and you get a lot of that crab meat.
Teriyaki & grill
Katsu plate ($14)
The Katsu plate is a deep fried cutlet with rice and salad. It’s a good-sized entree for 1 person for those of you who don’t like any type of raw fish but your friends insist on dragging you to a sushi restaurant.
I find the katsu to have a little too much sauce, causing the batter/appearance of the cutlet to look too dark (can be mistaken for being burnt).
Nigiri combos
Hidden inside their nigiri combos section of the menu, they have some large party trays that are strangely not included in the party tray section.
Umi Sushi Aburi and Oshi Platter ($40)
This platter is designed for aburi oshi lovers! Aburi or oshi sushi are the sushi rolls that are pressed into squares and seared with a flame. It’s a very Vancouver-esque take on sushi so it is different from the traditional sushi you find in Japan.
This tray comes with 4 pieces of assorted aburi nigiri, a tom’s roll, and six pieces of salmon oshi sushi, served with real wasabi. One order comes with 18 pieces of sushi.
A very filling platter with a lot of different oshi specialties. I preferred their nigiri aburi over their aburi rolls. They went a tad bit more on the mayo but it is not overpowering.
Umi Sushi and Sashimi Platter ($47)
This platter does not include any aburi/oshi and only has traditional sushi and sashimi items. Inside the platter, we have 10 pieces of Sushi Umi’s chef’s nigiri selection and ten pieces of Sushi Umi’s chef’s sashimi selection. Served with real wasabi. One order comes with 26 pieces.
Another filling tray filled with lots of goodies. The sashimi is thick cut and doesn’t taste frozen. I really liked the fatty tuna and fatty salmon nigiri they included in the platter.
Final thoughts
We spent a total of $165 on everything we ordered split between 6 people. For the amount we spent, we had a lot of variety and the quality of the sushi is good.
I really enjoyed the nigiri combo platters as they cater to both aburi lovers and traditional sushi lovers. You can easily share 1 platter between a family or 2 people. Presentation was great and the quality of the food was not hindered by take-out – everything was packaged well and nothing spilled or got messed up upon delivery.
Sincerely, Loewe
