The Hard Bean Brunch Co.: Popular brunch in Port Moody

The Hard Bean Brunch Co. is a popular brunch spot with locations in Port Moody, Langley and a downtown Vancouver location coming soon!

I am a brunch girlie and I love to eat breakfast food for lunch so I was excited to check out The Hard Bean Brunch Co. We came with 2 other friends as a group of 4 adults and checked out their brunch menu on a busy Sunday morning.

The vibe

LOL @ the distortion to my husband’s head in this photo πŸ˜‚.

We came on a Sunday morning with no reservation so we had to wait for maybe 20 minutes before a table opened up. Since this may be the busiest day of the week, I didn’t think 20 mins was that bad but I do think finding parking for this restaurant can be a bit of a hassle. We were lucky and found street parking right in front of it, but there are not that many spots available.

The restaurant was buzzing with energy and it had exactly the kind of vibe I expected from a restaurant that specializes in brunch. The entire restaurant gets a lot of natural sunlight coming in through all the windows, and there are large comfortable booth seating that can accommodate large groups.

Overall, I liked the sunny appeal and felt it is a good environment for families πŸ˜„.

Food and drinks review

Here is everything we ordered for 4 people. Prices are in CAD and rounded to the nearest dollar for simplicity.

Iced coffee ($5)

Pretty simple drink order – the iced coffee. They served it in a mason jar which just had me in a millennial chokehold πŸ’€. For the price, this is a pretty big cup jar of iced coffee.

Latte ($7)

Seems like a latte is served in a mug and not a mason jar. It may be hard to see in the photo as there’s no scale reference, but it is a pretty large mug.

The sunrise sando ($19)

Our friend orders the sunrise sando, which is a breakfast burger from the handheld section of the menu. The burger comes with a fried egg, lettuce, swiss cheese, hard mayo and a choice of bacon, hard ham or a turkey chicken patty. My friend also chose french fries for her side.

I can’t really comment much on the taste since I didn’t eat this dish (my friend said it was good πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ), but I found both the burger and fries to be a reasonable portion for 1 person and for the price.

Yorkshire benny ($18)

Kelvin cannot choose between a savoury or sweet option so he actually orders 2 brunch dishes for himself πŸ™„. For his savoury option, he ordered the yorkshire eggs benny.

With this eggs benny, you have a choice of hard ham, bacon, prawn (+$2), salmon (+$7) or avocado. I think he went with either hard ham or the bacon after asking the waitress for her recommendation.

Underneath the protein, they use yorkshire pudding instead of English muffins or other alternatives. I thought this was pretty cute and unique 😯! The yorkshire pudding held the contents of the eggs benny quite well and it was easy to cut up and eat. Drizzled on top is hollandaise sauce and soft medium poached eggs. It comes with a side of smashed browns (roasted really well and seasoned deliciously).

Hard Bean Co. hash ($20)

I love potatoes so much and when I saw the hash on the menu, I knew I would be ordering this. This dish has a bed of smashed browns (again, seasoned and roasted so well!), ham, caramelized onion, bloody Mary sauce, red pepper, eggs, shredded brussel sprouts, green onion, grana padano cheese and slices of garlic toast.

I really enjoyed this dish and it had everything I love about breakfast combined in one bowl. The eggs were poached well and oozed out after I sliced it, and it covered all the other components underneath it. I also thought the garlic toast was a nice touch also.

For a small girl, I did finish this but near the end I was feeling incredibly full. This is a pretty heavy dish and is easy to share with another person.

Strawberry loving waffle ($16)

The sweet option that Kelvin couldn’t give up was this strawberry waffle. How we managed to eat this is beyond me because between the hash and the yorkshire eggs benny, we were both so full so I think we shared this with the whole table.

For $16, you get 4 slices of crispy and fluffy waffles, topped with strawberries mascarpone whip, syrup and icing sugar.

I did feel this dish was quite good but I wish I wasn’t so full so I could enjoy it more. Overall, I think it is reasonable for the price and the portions and I liked the mascarpone whip with the strawberries – not too sweet!

Final thoughts

Loewe’s rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

We had a really filling and yummy brunch at The Hard Bean Brunch Co. in Port Moody. I know brunch sometimes can cost an arm and a leg + a 1 hour wait downtown πŸ’€, but I felt our experience at The Hard Bean Brunch Co. was relatively worth it for everything.

The price is pretty average for a brunch place. You are looking at almost $20 per person for a dish but the portions lean towards the generous side.

For flavour, I think they did a great job with the smashed potatoes and french fries πŸ‘. The poached eggs were all spot on and the sweet waffles were also delicious.

Looking at the menu, The Hard Bean Brunch Co. has a really wide selection of savoury, sweet and non-breakfast items so I feel like there really is something for everyone here. They also offer cocktails too if you are looking for a boozy brunch with the girls.

Service was pretty good considering the restaurant was very busy. We didn’t wait too long for our food and everything went smoothly.

We will be back to check out more items and their brunchy hour (happy hour) menu if we are in the area!

Sincerely, Loewe
