The Junction House: International brunch in Seminyak

Another restaurant review from my recent trip to Bali!

The Junction House is a restaurant me and 3 friends visited for brunch before we went shopping in Seminyak Square. Originally, we put our name down for Sisterfields (another popular brunch spot), but there was a long wait and it was so hot so we walked a few more steps down the street and saw Junction House. The Junction House is located almost right across the mall from us and was able to seat us without a wait.

Interior

The exterior and interior is modelled after French-inspired Parisian houses. It looks very European/Kingsman.

They seated us in a lounge-type of table where the table height is more like a coffee table and there are sofas facing a fireplace. Usually I don’t like these types of seating but the seats were actually pretty low to the ground so I didn’t need to bend over my back to eat over a coffee table.

One interesting thing to note is the door to the washrooms – it is hidden behind a bookcase wall!

Food and drinks review

Here is everything we ordered for 4 people. Prices are converted from IDR to CAD and rounded up to the nearest dollar.

Tummy happy ($4)

I order this drink as it is listed under “healthy juices” and I was really thirsty and hot and coffee makes me poop right away. It is called tummy happy, which is funny because the joke is that a lot of visitors to Bali get “Bali belly” AKA traveler’s diarrhea. My tummy was feeling not so great my first 2-3 days in Bali so I wanted to see if this juice would actually help. It has pineapple, ginger and lemon juice.

The ginger is quite strong so if you don’t like the taste of ginger, maybe avoid any drink that lists ginger in it. Aside from that, it tasted good and I actually felt like the ginger made my nausea a little better.

Ice coffee ($3)

Simple ice coffee.

Nutty hangover ($5)

I’m not sure if this is actually the nutty hangover, but my friend orders a smoothie that comes out looking like an espresso martini. If you’re wondering though, the nutty hangover smoothie contains yogurt, almond milk, and peanut butter.

Smashed avo ($9)

If you’re from Vancouver like me, you’ll know an average avocado toast will cost you $15-20. Well at $9 I just had to order it! I also wanted something light for breakfast.

Junction’s smashed avo uses avocado salsa, cheese, and smoked salmon on a homemade multi-grain toast. On the side, they also have some sautéed mushrooms and veggies. The portion size is pretty big and a great deal for $9. Love the smoked salmon on top as well.

Goulash croquette ($6)

I seem to have forgotten to take a photo of the croquettes, but you can see them in this bigger photo here of all the dishes. It is the one that looks like giant mozza sticks.

I’ve eaten a lot of croquettes before because I love them – deep fried goodness. I usually like the potato or corn croquettes the most, but I’ve never had a goulash croquette. Inside is stewed meat, and it was pretty tasty and stayed inside the batter as a nice hot appetizer.

Soto ayam ($7)

My friend orders the soto ayam. It is a traditional Indonesian dish with chicken broth, chicken meat, veggies, rice noodle, and egg. They often serve it with some sambal and chips as sides.

Nasi goreng ($7)

Another traditional Indonesian dish, the nasi goreng is a fried rice with shredded chicken, sautéed veggies, egg and served with a side of prawn crackers/chips. I would say nasi goreng is probably the most popular dish in Bali that we’ve seen so far.

The nasi goreng at Junction again has a pretty large portion size and even comes with a meat skewer. It is fried well and has lots of flavour.

Mie goreng ($7)

Very similar to the nasi goreng, I order the mie goreng. It is almost the same thing except they use fried noodles instead of rice. Out of the 2, I think the nasi goreng was tastier but both were really good and I couldn’t finish all of the noodles.

Final thoughts

Loewe’s rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (would have been 4 if we didn’t feel sick after 😬)

We ordered a lot of food for brunch at The Junction House in Seminyak. Their menu offers a wide selection of western dishes like classic brunch, pastas, sandwiches, as well as traditional Indonesian dishes like the nasi goreng and mie goreng. Presentation was really nice and portion sizes were big compared to the prices.

We stumbled upon Junction by chance, but we did check their Google listing before we went in and saw they had a high number of stars and reviews (lots of foreigners inside as well). However, I will say that all 4 of us had stomach issues later that day and we can only attribute it to The Junction House because it was our first meal of the day before we felt sick. So I’m not saying for sure you will get diarrhea after eating here, but I am saying that we all did lol.

Sincerely, Loewe
