The Lobster Man: Fresh shellfish and lobster rolls in Granville Island

I am a big fan of shellfish – shrimp, lobster, oysters, crab… love all of them 😍! I have always preferred seafood over meat so I was pretty excited to check out The Lobster Man on Granville Island.

The Lobster Man is both an eatery and a live shellfish market where you can buy fresh seafood to bring home. They are one of the original tenants of Granville Island have been in business since 1977 😮. We were invited to try their lobster and shrimp rolls and here is how our experience went!

Disclaimer: We received 2 lobster rolls and 1 shrimp roll for free for an Instagram collaboration, but I will include prices in this post.

The vibe

Granville Island is such a fun and vibrant place to be! The vibes for Granville Island make me think of a more joyous Seattle. With the public market, boutique shops, bakeries, theatres, and art galleries, there is definitely a bustling vibe and live music and children in the courtyards. It makes me feel like buying overpriced organic groceries and a box of cherries that are not in season 😂.

We drove down on a sunny Sunday morning and it was pretty busy but you will be able to find paid parking.

The Lobster Man has a small shop with a counter area where you can order food and buy frozen seafood. They don’t have dining spots available inside, but they do have a tent area outside with 1-3 tables for you to sit outside and eat.

Next to it, there is a larger area where you can buy fresh seafood. They have lobster, crab, clams and a huge selection of oysters 🦪! Everything looked very fresh and very reasonably priced. We ended up buying some live clams to go home and make clam pasta and every single clam opened up during the steaming process. It was so yummy!

Food review

📢 Current promotion: The Lobster Man currently has a promotion available where if you buy 2 lobster rolls you get 1 shrimp roll for free, available until December 20, 2024.

Signature lobster roll ($25) + Connecticut lobster roll ($26)

There are 2 lobster rolls on the menu and I am unsure if we received 1 of each or if both of them are the signature lobster roll, but the second one is a Connecticut lobster roll for $1 more ($26).

The signature lobster roll features Atlantic lobster, mayo, celery and a brioche bun. The Connecticut lobster roll also features Atlantic lobster, warm butter, lemon juice and a brioche bun. Both came with a side of chips.

These are a hefty size and I was very satisfied with the amount of lobster they stuff into the brioche buns. I think it is quite worth the $25 price tag 👍!

The lobster roll was so yummy – slightly creamy and refreshing at the same time. I devoured mine within minutes 😈. The chips as sides also gave a nice salty crunch.

Shrimp roll ($18)

This is the shrimp roll that comes free if you buy 2 lobster rolls. It is packed with Nordic cold water shrimp, which are pretty small in size but it is normal for shrimp rolls to use these types of shrimps. It also has celery, mayo and a brioche bun.

The shrimp roll is lighter than the lobster roll, but still gives off a refreshing taste that pairs well with the flavours of the shrimp.

Manhattan clam chowder ($8)

My husband loves clam chowder so he ordered this cup of Manhattan clam chowder from the menu. For $8, I think the portion is too small but it tasted fine. I think usually he prefers a Boston style clam chowder (white and creamy) instead of Manhattan (red).

Final thoughts

Loewe’s rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We had a delicious lunch at The Lobster Man in Granville Island. The lobster rolls were delicious, good portions and a reasonable price for how fresh the lobster meat was. The shrimp roll was also a pretty good deal, but I think the lobster roll is just more worth it. You can also add uni to it!

The Lobster Man is more of a grab-and-go takeout place as there isn’t really a dining area. It was nice and sunny the day we went, but I can imagine it being too cold to eat outside as we enter winter.

The live seafood area was also really cool so I recommend you to also buy some fresh seafood to take home. Prices were super reasonable and the quality was great.

Sincerely, Loewe
