Whistler has so many highly rated restaurants and The Mexican Corner has been on my list for a long time.
Located in Whistler Village near the ski lifts, sits The Mexican Corner on the second floor above the hot dog stand (Zog’s). They offer authentic Mexican cuisine like tacos, quesadillas and margaritas served in a festive, contemporary space.
We came here on a Friday night around 7:30pm for dinner for 2 and there was no wait!

I say there is no wait but the last time we were here, there was a waitlist. The Mexican Corner doesn’t take reservations, only first come first serve. When we finished our meal around 8:30pm, there was a line waiting outside.
This was my first time here so I’ve only stood in the entrance before. There is a fun bar near the entrance an an open kitchen concept with beautiful tile art, but I find the bar seating near the door too cold, especially if there’s a line waiting and people are coming in and out. There is patio seating as well but in the winter, it doesn’t seem to be open.
Inside is actually not that large of a space. The chairs we were seated at were bar table and bar stool height, which is not ideal for me (I am short and a little clumsy 😅). But aside from that, the chair was plush and comfortable and we had a nice view of outside. Lighting was dim with warm lighting.
Food and drinks review
We ordered everything to share between 2 adults. Prices are in CAD and rounded to the nearest dollar for simplicity.
Passionfruit limonada ($12)

So I tried to do dry January this year and I failed miserably 🙃 (I fail every year 🙃🙃). But this year made me especially reflect on whether or not I have a drinking problem 💀. Anyways, that is a blog post for another time, but essentially, I have extended my dry January to become my new year resolution so here I have ordered a mocktail.
This passionfruit limonada has passionfruit puree, fresh lime juice, a simply syrup and is topped with soda.
I don’t think I have ever ordered a mocktail and certainly the $12 price tag was not very enticing because $12 is almost the price of a real cocktail 😒. However, surprisingly, I really enjoyed this non-alcoholic beverage. It was tangy, zesty and gave me some energy that I can make it through the year without any alcohol 😳.
The guacamole experience ($17)

I am a guac girl – I love guac 🥰! In fact, if someone can overdose on guac, I think that someone would be me.
They promote this guacamole as an experience on the menu, so I was expecting it to be made tableside or have some sort of spectacle to it, but it was just delivered to our table like any other dish.
The guac is good. They say it is made the traditional way with fresh avocado, lime juice and Pico de gallo. It was on the sour side but packed a punch, which I liked. It also came with a small plate of Molcajete salsa, which was also quite good.
It was served with corn tortilla chips, which were not my favourite. I felt like they tasted similar to ones I can buy at the grocery stores. I usually prefer the house made tortilla chips that are thicker and have a bigger crunch.
Overall for $17, I don’t think this guacamole experience is doing it for me – seems overpriced 🥴, but hey, you get a free refill on chips.
Tacos ($24+)

You can order 3 tacos for $24 but some choices cost extra and sadly, the ones we wanted were all an extra +$1. For our 3, we chose one fish taco and two al pastor tacos.
The pork pastor tacos were ok – my first bite was a little dry and I actually added some of the salsa from the guac to supplement it 😟. However, my husband had the second al pastor taco and his had sauce dripping out of it. Aside from the pork, there’s some pineapple, cilantro, and onion on a corn tortilla.
We shared the baja fish taco – it is corn battered and has a great crunch to it so it is fried quiet well. The white fish meat inside is soft and flaky. On top, we have a little bit of a Mexican slaw, pico de gallo and Zarandeado sauce. I think the fish taco was better than the pork one.
All 3 were a decent size. I would be full off of just 2 tacos.
Pulpo zarandeado ($42)

My husband and I love octopus dishes so we ordered this main to share as it caught our eye. It ended up being our favourite dish of the night 🤩!
Here we have a generous portion of slow cooked octopus. It has a great smokiness to it and the Chipotle Zarandeado sauce also gives it a good kick. The octopus is cooked perfectly – soft and not chewy 👍!
Paired with it is some honey baked yam and a fennel salad. The yam is slightly sweet and balances out the saltiness and smokiness of the octopus. The fennel salad is refreshing. Overall, we think this dish is worth $42.
Final thoughts
Loewe’s rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
We had a decent dinner at The Mexican Corner in Whistler.
The star of the night was definitely the octopus dish and if we come back, it would be for this dish.
I would not order again is the guacamole experience – it’s just too expensive for guacamole 😣.
The tacos are not a bad choice, but there is a much cheaper option for tacos in Whistler village, so that may be another option.
The drinks here seem to be a lot of fun and they have a huge selection of mezcal and tequila. If I was drinking, I would’ve definitely ordered the mango margarita (or a pitcher of something). I think this spot is better to go with a group of friends as the atmosphere is quite fun and playful.
Sincerely, Loewe
