The Praguery: Christmas chimney cakes and cones
The Praguery started off as a food truck serving chimney cakes and Prague’s cones. I visited their brick & mortar location in Gastown to try 2 of their new Christmas specials.
What is a chimney cake? It’s like a tube… with a hole in it. Chimney cakes are originally from Transylvania. They are made of dough rolled into a rope and then coiled. They are crunchy on the outside and often coated with sugar or cinnamon. Inside, they are fluffy!
Prague’s cones are derived from chimney cakes. The only difference is that the bottom is narrow and closed up like an ice-cream cone.
The space
The store is shaped like a hallway with a small area in the front to sit and eat your treat and a counter in the back to order. You can watch your chimney cake made fresh right in front of you. Note that there are no washrooms.
The brick walls and bar seating gives it a very hipster feel, quite fitting for Gastown.
Food
Their menu lists out all sorts of flavours including caramel, berry, black forest, strudel and more. If you are more of a savoury person, they also serve savoury chimney cakes with pulled pork inside.
All the dough and the soft-serve ice cream are made in house and fresh, which is always a great thing for Vancouver businesses.
The Praguery has 2 new Christmas specials this year for the holidays.
On the left, we have the freshly baked cinnamon chimney cake dipped in white chocolate and sprinkles. This one uses the original chimney cake (not the cone) and is much larger, giving you more of the original chimney cake yumminess. The white chocolate at the end makes it sweet and warm.
On the right, we have the freshly baked coconut cone filled with house made chocolate soft serve. This one is a prague cone, which means the bottom is closed up. Unlike the chimney cake, they dip the outside of the cone in coconut shavings instead of cinnamon, giving it a lighter and sweet taste.
Holy crap, there is so much chocolate ice cream inside this cone! The cone inside is filled with ice cream and they top it off by a lot! Well worth your money. This is definitely something to share if you are an adult. If you’re a kid, this is probably heaven.
Final thoughts
This is my first time trying chimney cakes from The Praguery. On average, their cones are under $10 but for the amount of ice cream you get, it is a great value – especially if you have a sweet tooth.
Their 2 Christmas specials are on now throughout the holidays. Make sure you try their limited edition flavours before it’s over!
Sincerely, Loewe
