Doo Gau Bee: Korean Chinese food in New Westminster
Doo Gau Bee is a Korean-Chinese restaurant in New Westminster. They offer many of the classic dishes like the black bean sauce noodles, sweet & sour pork and more.
This review is based off a takeout experience.
Food
I’ve been eating a lot of Korean-Chinese food recently because I love their affordable combos (giant portions too!). I was especially interested in trying out Doo Gau Bee because they have a shrimp appetizer I’ve only seen on a Korean variety show called “Fun Star Restaurant”.
Menbosha ($11)
This is the shrimp appetizer I’ve been wanting to try. A menbosha is basically a deep fried shrimp sandwich. I first saw a chef make it on Fun Star Restaurant and it looked sooo good:
The sandwich is filled with a ball of battered shrimp paste and deep fried. You dip it in this ketchup-like sour and tangy sauce.
The first one I had was amazing – so delicious and flavourful and crispy with a crunch. After my second, I could feel it being a bit too greasy so I wouldn’t order too much in one sitting. This order comes with 7 pieces.
Bibimbap ($16 for 2)
There was a special promotion where you can order 2 bibimbaps for $16. I believe their regular price is $13 for one.
A bibimbap is a Korean rice dish where they mix a bunch of different ingredients together like meats and assorted vegetables. I usually prefer my bibimbap to be in a hot stone bowl but that isn’t very realistic for takeout.
The bibimbap tastes pretty average (again, I am used to having the hot stone bowl and making crispy rice on the bottom). Presentation is pretty and portion size is large. We saved the second one for fried rice the next day.
Jja Jang Myeon ($8)
This is the black bean sauce noodle. It is packaged separately so you have to mix the sauce with the cooked noodles yourself and it makes a terrible gross squishing sound.
In my experience, I find that the jja jang myeon is never as good if you order for takeout. There is nothing wrong with the dish itself
Tan Su Yuk ($22 for large)
We usually go for the sweet & sour chicken, but we decided to try and give the sweet & sour pork another go. Sadly, it still does not taste as good as the sweet & sour chicken. The pork meat is often more dry than the chicken meat and maybe the batter is even different? We find the chicken to be crunchier even if they toss it in the sauce.
Portion size is too large for 2 people. We ate this for the next 2 days with friends and re-fried it in our air fryer.
Final thoughts
In total, we spent $60 on this meal after the bibimbap discount and delivery app discount. It is obviously too much food for 2 people but we have no self control so this is how we do it.
I liked every dish and found the food to be quite easy to re-heat, re-fry, or re-cook the next day. My favourite is probably the menbosha because I finally got to taste it and I also liked their bibimbap. Sweet & sour pork has failed me once more so I think we’ll only be ordering sweet & sour chicken moving forward from Korean-Chinese places.
One thing I have to note is that we didn’t order a combo like we usually do and that’s because their combo A doesn’t include a spicy seafood noodle like most places do. Instead, they serve 2 different types of sweet & sour meats, which we thought would be too much.
Sincerely, Loewe
