OEB: Bougie brunch in Yaletown

OEB Breakfast Co. is a brunch restaurant that first started in Calgary, Alberta. They now have several locations across Canada with Vancouver’s location being in the Yaletown district.

OEB has been on my foodie list for a long time but this review will be based on a takeout experience due to COVID-19.

Food

Unfortunately, OEB does not offer their blue plate specials on their takeout platforms. The blue plate specials include things like lobster and shrimp crepes, croque madame, and other types of specialty brunch dishes.

Therefore, we order a breakfast poutine and a breakfast sandwich.

Gold digga ($21)

From the available breakfast poutines, I select the gold digga. It has 2 poached eggs, duck fat fried herb potatoes (!!!), Saint Cyrille curds, Berkshire roast pork, black truffles and a brown butter hollandaise sauce.

It is a hefty breakfast poutine and it tastes delicious – especially the duck fat fried herb potatoes omg. You can see the black truffles they add into the poutine and it gives it an even stronger taste, really accents the potatoes. Eggs are poached perfectly. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the roast pork (didn’t taste like anything special to me).

The notorious BIT ($18)

My boyfriend orders the notorious BIT sandwich because he was seduced by the patty description. They describe this sandwich to have a proprietary blend of brisket, chuck & short-rib burger, white truffle aioli and a Japanese milk bun.

I’m not that into a heavy breakfast like a burger (but what am I saying my poutine is pretty heavy too lol), but my boyfriend really liked the patty. The waffle chips were not as thin as chips so has some of that potato in there still. A nice pairing with the burger. The white truffle aioli got kind of lost in the burger in my opinion, it was not very predominant in the burger.

Final thoughts

Overall, we liked what we ordered from OEB but for the price point, I would not order these 2 items again. Mostly, I was disappointed that OEB’s takeout menu does not offer the same dishes as their in-dining menu. Even without the blue special plates menu, their poutine menu includes other bowls with different types of seafood (lobster, scallops, etc.), but none of these were available for takeout.

We will return to OEB again to try out their signature dishes with seafood. Without the seafood, I can’t help but think the dishes are overpriced with or without any addition of truffle. With the seafood addition and having it freshly prepared vs. in a takeout, I think it will be a whole new experience.

Sincerely, Loewe
