FusionCore Japanese Eatery: Sushi takeout in Burnaby
My boyfriend and I like to order food a quite frequently, and one of our favourite places to order from is FusionCore Japanese Eatery in Burnaby. I have never been at their physical location but when I looked online, it looked like they mostly only focus on takeout orders and do not really offer dine-in (works for us!).
FusionCore is currently our favourite sushi takeout place because we believe they give us premium quality without the premium price.
Food
We have ordered from them many times, but here are some of our favourites/repeats.
Croquette sampler ($7)
I love croquettes because they are deep fried huehue. Anyways, we really like ordering their croquette sampler because they give you 3 croquettes in total, cut in half so it’s nice to share between 2 people. The 3 flavours are cream corn, potato and pumpkin.
My personal favourite is the cream corn – save it for last! But all 3 are yummy and fried well. They never arrive soggy.
Chicken gristle karaage ($8)
This is similar to the dim-sum dish with chicken cartilage/knees. Usually, Japanese chicken karaage doesn’t use this cut of meat but if you like cartilage/chicken knees at dim-sum, you will probably like this dish because it is exactly what you expect. For those who have never tried chicken cartilage, it is just like normal chicken karaage except the cartilage makes it a bit more chewy and less meaty.
For the price, they give you a lot!
Salmon oshi aburi and Scallop oshi aburi ($13 each)
The salmon and scallop pressed and seared sushi are the same price and come in 6 pieces per order. I really like aburi oshi sushi but I am also weirdly picky about it lol. Some places mess up the ratio of rice to fish or put too much mayo/sauce on it, but FusionCore’s is pretty decent. I actually preferred the scallop one over the salmon here, but both were yummy and big pieces.
Selected nigiri
We have ordered different nigiri to try.
Aburi foie gras ($14)
My friends really like foie gras sushi. If you are Japanese, you may be deeply offended lol. But anyways, one order of the foie gras nigiri for $14 will give you 2 pieces so this is definitely an expensive piece of sushi. The foie gras is very fatty melts with the rice.
Tamago nigiri ($4)
My boyfriend loves the egg sushi so we always get it lol. Personally I think $4 a piece is expensive for tamago nigiri, but at least they give you a lot of it and it is rolled tightly with a sweet taste.
Bluefin lean cut nigiri ($6)
We’ve ordered this lean cut bluefin tuna before because we were too cheap to buy their fattiest bluefin tuna (which sits at $20 a piece!!!). Anyways, I thought this was actually pretty worth because they actually give you about 3 slices of lean cut bluefin tuna on 1 nigiri – yummy!
Btw there is also a salmon roe nigiri in the above photo ($4 a piece). My boyfriend also likes to get this and spread the ikura to other nigiris to upgrade it haha.
Deluxe adventure ($29)
This, my friends, is the star of the show. If you order anything from FusionCore, please let it be this deluxe assorted 10-piece sushi platter. It is the BEST deal because for $30, you get 10 pieces of sushi and 3-4 of them are premium nigiris.
I have ordered this many times, suspecting the assorted sushi is different on different days (just whatever is in stock), but it is the same every time. In the 10 pieces, you will get 1 of each:
- Salmon (regular)
- Tuna (regular)
- Wild salmon
- Fatty salmon
- Squid
- Octopus
- Hokkigai (surf clam)
- Scallop (giant)
- Spot prawn (big – not the tiny ones like at Sushi Town)
- Uni (!!!)
When I say premium nigiris, I am talking about the uni, spot prawn, big scallop and the fatty salmon (toro salmon). Of course, uni has its different grades but I find a lot of uni sushi to be around $8 a piece in Vancouver so it’s already very worth it to have it be included in this platter. At times we’ve had uni nigiris that don’t taste as good as other times we’ve gotten it, just fyi.
Also love the spot prawn. Even when it is not spot prawn season, they use the big one, not the 3 tiny ones that other sushi places use sometimes for amaebi nigiri.
Final thoughts
Loewe’s rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Out of everything we usually order, I would say the must-orders are the deluxe adventure and the croquette sampler (but that’s only if you like croquettes!). I would even recommend getting the deluxe adventure per person and not sharing it because each piece is different so it’s a little hard to share. Think of it like a cheap omakase at home!
Aside from this deluxe adventure, the other sushi we have tried and appetizers are all very good and I find the price to be very reasonable. Of course, they offer more premium nigiris (like that $20 bluefin tuna piece omg lol), which we have (yet) to order so if you want to ball out, I do believe they have a better/more fresh selection of fish to meet those kinds of orders.
Again, our current favourite sushi takeout place!
Sincerely, Loewe
