Hy’s Steakhouse & Cocktail Bar: Classic steakhouse in Whistler Village
After a long day of snowboarding, I like to treat myself to a well-deserved expensive protein dinner in Whistler Village π! This year during our first weekend in Whistler (we usually go twice a year), we treated ourselves to Hy’s Steakhouse & Cocktail Bar.
Hy’s has 2 locations in BC – one in Whistler and one in downtown Vancouver. Since they have a location downtown, we kind of overlooked it. When we stay in Whistler, we usually want to go to restaurants that we can only find in Whistler. But while saying this, I realize I had also never gone to Hy’s Vancouver location to dine before either π . I had only been once to their happy hour at the Whistler location.

We dined here with 2 other friends as a table of 4 and we shared everything. Here is how our experience went!

The vibe
The interior of Hy’s is dark and moody with wood paneled walls. We were seated comfortably in a booth table with plush seating and a bit more privacy than tables out in the open dining side.

Caesar salad ($21)
We were first looking at the sides for a vegetable option but realized most of the veggie sides are almost $20 so instead we opted for the Caesar salad instead, which is only $1-2 more.
I’m not usually a salad person but I was kind of excited because on the menu they say the Caesar salad is a Hy’s tradition and it is prepared tableside in the dining room.
Sure enough, our server rolled out a small table and started preparing the salad in front of us with a wooden salad bowl and everything. I know Caesar salads were traditionally prepared a certain way by smashing and mixing the sauce ingredients at the bottom of the bowl and the tossing of the romaine lettuce so it was interesting to see it made this way. Again, I don’t usually order salad so I don’t think I’ve ever eaten a Caesar salad prepared “properly” before.
The salad was large enough for 4 of us to share and we all talked about how it had a kick to it. The salad tasted a little spicy but also very flavourful with a generous topping of cheese.
Steak tartare ($27)
One thing I really wanted to try on the menu was the steak tartare. This appetizer is also a tableside service like the Caesar salad so the server comes out again with all the ingredients to make the steak tartare in front of us.
The steak tartare here is a classic version with hand-chopped Filet, Dijon mustard, shallots and cornichon. It is served with hard cooked eggs and toasted baguette.
The portion is a little small but essentially there was around 5 servings of this tartare because it comes with 5 baguettes π. The tartare tasted decent to me but I didn’t really like the hard cooked egg pairing (kind of dry).
Beef wellington ($69)
We shared 2 main items between the 4 of us. The first was the beef wellington that my friend was interested in. Inside the baked puff pastry is a filet of beef tenderloin, with foie gras and oyster mushroom duxelle. There is also a small bundle of wrapped asparagus and a red wine reduction.
I really liked the presentation of this dish – it looked so cute with the design on the puff pastry π! Upon cutting it open, I did notice the filet inside kind of separated from the rest of the components. Overall, I think it’s hard for anything to taste bad with puff pastry, but it did fall apart as I tried to cut a bite for myself. I thought the foie gras was a nice touch but not necessary and the oyster mushroom duxelle could have a stronger flavour.
Price-wise, I think it is reasonable because of the foie gras and size – I would not be able to finish this on my own and would need to share with at least another person.
32 oz Bone-in rib steak ($145)
Our star dish for the night was this 32oz bone-in rib steak to share π€©.
All of Hy’s prime steaks are specially selected Prime Grade beef and aged a minimum of 28 days. They are grilled to order and accompanies by your choice of baked potato, french fries or mashed potatoes. We opted for mashed potatoes and agreed to it being pre-sliced for sharing.
I am usually more of a seafood person over a steak but I do think this steak was executed very well! It was delicious and juicy with bursts of flavour. I also think the portion was good to share between the 4 of us (I had about pieces and I was very full).
Banana foster ($19)
Lastly for dessert, we ordered yet again another tableside service (bless our server). This time, it’s the banana foster dessert.
Our server cooked ripe bananas and sautΓ©ed them with butter, brown sugar and fresh orange juice. Then she flambΓ©ed it with dark rum, creating quite a fire show π₯! It is served with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream.
I think this dessert was really fun and exciting because of the tableside service, but the dessert itself was just ok to me. To be fair, I don’t like bananas. But aside from that, I felt like it was a very simple dessert for $19, essentially cooked bananas, ice cream and a rum sauce. Still, I think it is fun to order especially if you are celebrating a special occasion.
Final thoughts
Loewe’s rating: βοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈ
We had a very protein-filled and delicious dinner at Hy’s Steakhouse & Cocktail Bar in Whistler.
Hy’s is an expensive restaurant but I think the quality of the food meets the price point and aftering sharing, it was a reasonable amount for me (under $100 pp). My favourite dishes of the night were the Caesar salad and the bone-in rib steak. Both of which I believe are worth the price point and great for sharing. I would not order the banana dessert or the beef wellington again.
Service started off ok and ended on a higher note with all of the tableside service. Our server was really awesome at all 3 tableside service and was able to converse with us and focus on preparing the dish at the same time. It can be stressful!
At the start, I did feel our server was pushing us to order more food (like the cheese toast or adding another side) but I also feel like that may be protocol for them because the last time I was here for happy hour, they also pushed their signature cheese toast which is $13. I felt we ordered a good amount of food to share for the 4 of us and everything went smoothly.
All in all, I think Hy’s Steakhouse is a good option if you want to treat yourself to a good steak or have a romantic evening.
Sincerely, Loewe
