This review is based off an in-dining experience.
Interior
The restaurant is fairly small and half of the store has been optimized for their takeout process. There are tons of pre-packaged soup bases and food delivery packages ready to go.
We sat on the other side where there was a beautiful fake flower wall. It looks slightly out of place considering the rest of the interior, but it’s not bad for photos.
Food
Their menu consists of skewers and a variety of other Chinese tapas.
Skewers ($9+$0.69)
To order skewers, you are required to first select a soup base. You can choose between a broth soup base, pepper base, chili oil base, and some additional dipping sauces. All the soup bases cost around $8-9 and honestly, all of them are spicy. Don’t let the “broth soup base” misguide you. The broth is under a layer of spicy chili oil.
Skewers are around 69 cents to $1 each depending on what you order. We choose squid, spicy pork belly, beef, chicken strip, fish balls, scallops, and mini octopus.
Generally, this dish is just too spicy for me. They leave the skewers soaking in the soup base and when you take it out, the skewers are covered in the spicy chili oil. The skewers themselves are very small so that’s kind of disappointing, but for the price I feel it’s not too far off. I also prefer dry skewers in Chinese BBQ places so I didn’t like having them wet from the broth anyways (except for the fish balls).
I definitely don’t think the soup base is worth $9, especially if you don’t order that many skewers.
Hot pot potato noodles ($8)
This is a cold dish that we like to order because we find it refreshing. The potato noodles are flat style and chewy. I don’t mind that it is also sitting in a bowl of spicy chili oil. It can still become very spicy over time.
Sticky rice cake with brown sugar ($10)
We really hesitated to order this but this is a MUST TRY. This is a dessert dish and there’s only 5 pieces but it is the best 5 pieces of sticky rice cake you will ever eat. The inside is so soft and gentle like a cloud caressing your tongue. The brown sugar is caramelized on the outside and gives it a nice crunch.
After all the spiciness of the previous dishes, this dessert saved my mouth. I also think it’s quite unique for a dessert and I have not tasted anything with this texture before.
Final thoughts
Loewe’s rating: โญโญโญ
It was kind of a painful lunch because neither my boyfriend nor I can eat very spicy, but we made it through. We would return only with friends who like to eat really spicy.
I would only order skewers again in a larger group so that it’s more worth it. Also it looks more appetizing to just have more skewers in the large bowl. We packed up some of the leftover broth and used it on some wontons to make spicy chili wontons.
As for the dessert, I’m not so sure it would taste as good if we order it via take out. The sticky rice may have hardened by the time it arrives.
Sincerely, Loewe
