New Westminster Quay: Dog-walking and lunch
Ever since I got a puppy, I’ve been on the lookout for dog-friendly places.
The New Westminster Quay is a 2-mile boardwalk featuring views from the Fraser River. It leads to Pier Park, the Fraser River Discovery Centre and River Market. I like to come here with my dog, Tofu, for a fun walk and stop at their many patios for lunch.
Boardwalk
Tofu really likes having his walks here (although I’m sure he is happy with any walk lol). I personally like taking him here because it’s quite clean. My dog still has a bad habit of eating stuff off the ground so I always try to choose a “cleaner” street or park to take him to just in case he eats leftover joints or garbage or rubber.
They have both a sidewalk side and a boardwalk side so you get some nice different terrain. The views of the Fraser River are quite nice even though it’s a little more industrial than city landscape. It does not smell bad, which is a plus.
There is no traffic so if your dog loves to chase after cars, feel rest assured. The boardwalk is safely enclosed by residential properties.
You will also find many other dog walkers here so if you want to socialize your dog and have them interact with other dogs, this is a nice place to start.
Food options
There are several restaurants and food options along the boardwalk. Some options include The Boathouse (not dog-friendly), Angelina’s (a Dutch breakfast/brunch restaurant), Craft Cafe, Re-up BBQ, and more.
They also have a mini marketplace called River Market, which is where I like to stop for lunch. The marketplace has an outdoor patio area where you can sit with your dog outside and enjoy some food.
Longtail Kitchen
Longtail Kitchen is a Thai restaurant at the New Westminster Quay and probably my favourite lunch spot there. They are sister restaurants with one of my favourite Thai places, Maenam in Kitsilano. Longtail Kitchen is less fancy and more casual but I find their quality of food is still great.
Hand pulled roti with peanut sauce ($6)
I really like this snack and they give you quite a few pieces of roti. The roti is chewy and nice to pull apart and the peanut sauce is kind of sweet.
Pad thai prawns ($15)
I love pad thai! It’s my favourite Thai dish and also what I use to base my opinion on a Thai restaurant. Pad thai is a stir-fried noodle dish with peanuts.
Longtail Kitchen’s pad thai is delicious and the price is reasonable for the amount of food you get. I also love I don’t have to pay extra for prawns (same price as with chicken). They also offer pad thai with Tofu for vegetarians out there.
Tre Galli Gelato Caffe
Tre Galli Gelato Caffe is an Italian café next to Longtail Kitchen. They offer a variety of different sandwiches, paninis, gelato ice cream and pizza.
? Pizza lol
My boyfriend ordered a pizza with roasted peppers but he cannot remember the name or the price of this pizza. Generally, the pizza prices are $10-15. It’s a nice small-sized pizza that is good to share with 2 people, or if you are a hungry person you can probably finish it.
I thought the pizza was ok but it wasn’t the best pizza I’ve ever had. The roasted pepper gave it a burst of flavour and I liked the pizza crust as it was on the thinner side.
Final thoughts
The New Westminster Quay is one of our favourite spots to hang out with our dog and satisfy our food cravings. If you are looking for dog-friendly spots to walk your dog and also eat, take a stroll and check out the food options for yourself. I like that there is also free street parking if you drive around for a bit.
And if you see me and Tofu, please say hello!
Sincerely, Loewe
