Re Up BBQ: Southern barbeque in New Westminster

Re Up BBQ is a Southern-style barbeque restaurant located in New Westminster. It is conveniently located inside the River Market, a little shopping complex located by the New Westminster Quay. We saw it in passing on one of our walks and the food smelled really good!

We didn’t order food at this moment, but we decided to order their takeout a few days later to try them out. This review is based on a takeout experience.

Food

We order the “Full Barnyard”, which is a sampler dinner for 2-3 people.

The full barnyard ($45)

This sampler includes a half rack of ribs, one-third pound beef brisket, two pieces of fried chicken, two buttermilk biscuits or french fries, coleslaw and pit beans.

Coleslaw and pit beans

Let’s start off with the most uninteresting items on this menu lol. The coleslaw comes in quite a large container! It is packed with slaw and generally, it tastes fine (not too much sauce so I still feel like I am eating vegetables).

The pit beans were also kind of nice, but I personally don’t like beans too much. They were quite flavourful so if you’re a bean lover – you’ll probably really like this.

Buttermilk biscuits

We choose the buttermilk biscuits over the fries because we added yam fries to our order. The biscuits were dense and rich – a little on the small side – but the richness makes up for it.

I couldn’t finish mine and used my biscuits the next day for an eggs benny – still yummy!

Yam fries ($7)

This is not included in the full barnyard sampler. The yam fries were good but soggy from the takeout process.

Fried chicken

Their regular 2pc fried chicken with slaw and beans and BBQ sauce cost $9.

The fried chicken is good – juicy on the inside. The batter is not thick like Korean fried chicken. When dipped in the BBQ sauce, it tastes exponentially better!

BBQ beef brisket

Regular price for their beef brisket is $13. I’m not sure how many pieces you get in their al le carte order.

My boyfriend was excited about the BBQ beef brisket, but we were ultimately left disappointed. The meat was quite lean and not tender enough so it was slightly chewy and dry. It cannot compare to the beef briskets we’ve tasted in American BBQ restaurants.

BBQ ribs

The BBQ ribs are better than the beef brisket. They are more tender so the meat is not as dry, but it is not the best rack of ribs I have ever tasted.

The sauce/BBQ meat is not bad so the flavour is there.

Final thoughts

Loewe’s rating: โญโญ

Overall, we were not too impressed by the BBQ items and would not be ordering from them regularly. Things might be different if you order and eat in-person right away.

I think their full barnyard sampler is a good deal because we couldn’t finish our food. It’s definitely more for 3 adults than 2.

Sincerely, Loewe
