Ravenlady: Seafood food truck in Ucluelet

Ravenlady is a food truck located in Ucluelet (on the Vancouver Islands) offering seafood and oysters. We first saw it when we were on our way to the liquor store and we were drawn to their enticing menu of buttermilk fried oysters.

We came back the next day for lunch and unfortunately, the buttermilk fried oysters were all sold out (SAD) but we ordered other things for lunch.

Read about my full trip to Tofino here.

Location

I think Ravenlady has quite a nice location because it is next to the liquor store lol. They have an open lot where there are a few picnic tables scattered around and interesting pieces of art.

In the center of the lot is a statue of a lady and a raven, hence the name Ravenlady. My favourite is the art tree where there are many shucked oyster shells hung on the branches like decoration.

Food

Broiled oysters ($15 for 2)

We order this because the fried oysters are sold out. I have never tried broiled oysters before so I was also interested in giving it a try.

The oysters are on the larger side and are locally sourced. They broil it with potatoes, garlic and herb butter and some other things in there I am not too sure about. The taste is very new to me because all the toppings kind of do overwhelm the original freshness of the oyster so it doesn’t taste as “fishy” or “like the sea”.

Shrimp roll ($18)

I love po’boys so shrimp rolls is kind of similar. Ravenlady’s shrimp roll is made of a baby shrimp salad, dill and stuffed inside a brioche hot dog bun and sprinkled with some fried jalapenos. Also comes with a side of fries.

Now I have to disclose that I had just injured my jaw during surfing an hour or so ago, so it was quite painful for me to open my mouth wide and munch into a sandwich, or in this case, a shrimp roll. So my experience wasn’t super pleasant but I don’t think it has much to do with the food quality lol.

I did find the fried jalapenos kept falling off my shrimp roll so I gave up trying to fit it all in my injured mouth. Compared to a lobster roll, I would say a shrimp roll in general does not taste as good. Probably because baby shrimp was used so I didn’t get big chunks of shrimp meat like I would with lobster meat.

2-Piece fish & chips ($20)

This fish & chips is pretty massive so it’s good to share between 2 adults. The fish they use is snapper, battered and fried crispy into your classic fish & chips dish. They have tartare sauce, lemon, and a side of fries.

This is probably one of the best fish & chips I’ve had in a long while. The fish tastes very fresh and soft. The batter doesn’t separate from the fish meat so the balance is really there. Fries are good and not soggy so overall, a really great fish & chips place.

Final thoughts

Ravenlady has quite an extensive and attractive seafood menu. They cook oysters in a lot of different ways – broiled, raw and shucked, fried, etc. This food truck is definitely a must try in Ucluelet for any seafood and oyster fans.

In terms of the items I tried, I think the fish & chips tasted the best. Portions were on the larger side and the general food quality was high. Prices lean towards the pricey side but for the quality of seafood, I think it is reasonable. In total, we spent $62 on lunch for 2 people but that’s because we added on the broiled oysters.

Would love to see Ravenlady open some food truck locations in the Lower Mainland!

Sincerely, Loewe
