Shiok Singaporean Cuisine: Singapore takeout in Burnaby

Shiok is a Singaporean restaurant located in Burnaby. Due to COVID-19, they do not offer in-dining so this review is based on only a takeout experience.

Food

We order a variety of different appetizers and main dishes for 3 people. Again, we tend to over-order because we want to try so many dishes.

Roti prata ($5)

This roti appetizers is one of my favourite in Singaporean cuisine. Roti is a delicious flaky Indian flatbread also known as roti canai. You take this thin, chewy bread and dip it into chicken curry gravy.

Don’t let the image fool you – the roti is actually quite big, just folded several times to a neat small shape. This is a good appetizer to share with 2 people, but we actually ordered 3, thinking it would be for 1 person each.

The roti is a little greasy but tastes great with the curry gravy.

Chicken wings ($7)

We order some crispy deep fried prawn spiced chicken wings. For $7, we expected a larger portion size. The wings tasted good but nothing to rave home about. It can taste a little bland (kind of just like regular deep fried chicken wings).

Chicken curry puff ($4)

This adorable thing has chicken curry and a hard boiled egg combo inside a flaky pastry crust. It’s very savoury and filling, although it can taste a little dry with the amount of puff pastry surrounding it.

Tau Pok ($7)

This little appetizer are tofu puffs stuffed with cucumber and beansprouts and served with sweet and salty and spicy rojak sauce. I’m not sure why it came with a hard boiled egg as well, but the sauce goes really well with everything. The tofu puffs have a burst of flavour, but I think it’s overpriced for the amount and quality.

Boneless chicken rice ($14)

This is a traditional Singaporean take on Hainanese chicken rice, a dish I love to order. In general, this dish didn’t meet my expectations. The chicken meat tasted yummy and not dry, but I found that a lot of the pieces didn’t have the chicken skin (which I love). It’s also missing a few sauces that Hainanese chicken usually comes with (a spicy sauce, a soy sauce, and a green sauce), so I found the overall dish to be slightly drier than I prefer.

Duck rice ($14)

This main is only available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It’s a Singaporean take on braised duck on rice with tofu puffs and egg on the side.

I liked this rice dish better than the Hainanese chicken rice, but it’s quite similar except the meat is different and prepared differently.

Laksa ($14)

Singapore’s famous spicy seafood curry noodles. I liked this main the most out of the 3 that we ordered. I found the spicy seafood curry soup to be delicious – not too spicy with sweetness mixed in. We re-cooked the soup and added the noodles in and it was a very satisfying bowl.

Final thoughts

Overall, we enjoyed our dinner from Shiok and had a lot of leftovers (a lot of rice! haha). I think the prices are reasonable for the mains as the portion sizes are big. You can definitely order 1 main and 1 appetizer to share between 2 people.

The packaging really threw me off when I initially opened my takeout. Everything was wrapped in paper and the portion sizes looked really small, but they actually just really compact into the packaging. Don’t let the initial appearance fool you!

Sincerely, Loewe
