So Good Char Chan Tang: Hong Kong breakfast in Singapore

This is another restaurant review from my trip to Singapore. We woke up one morning and was craving a simple Hong Kong breakfast, so we checked out the nearest HK style cafรฉ to our hotel.

So Good Char Chan Tang literally translates to “So good cafรฉ” from Cantonese ๐Ÿ˜‚. It is a HK style fast food restaurant located on the first floor of Capitol Singapore. The google review is not the best – 3.4 stars, but we decided to give it a try anyways because sometimes a 3.5 actually means a 4 for Chinese restaurants (since an authentic Chinese restaurant has bad service ๐Ÿ’€).

The vibe

It was pretty busy when we arrived at around 9am. Before you enter the restaurant and take a seat, you actually order on one of their machine kiosks. After you submit your order and pay, you can go in and seat yourself at a table of your choice.

We chose a pretty big booth table across from their kitchen station area. There are TV screens around that shows your order number and when you see your number flash, you go up and pick up your own tray of food.

The booth is super spacious, comfy and there’s a lot of room for 2 people.

Food review

Here is everything we ordered for 2 people. They have a lot of value set/breakfast combos and we tied our best to optimize the items we ordered.

Prices listed in this post are in SGD but it’s almost 1:1 to CAD, and rounded to the nearest dollar amount.

Congee & rice roll set ($6)

I was craving some congee so I chose this set for only $6 under their oriental breakfast menu! You can choose from a variety of different congee, but I chose the HK sampan congee, which has different types of seafood, pork and peanuts. For my rice roll, I upgraded it to a shrimp rice roll (the combo just comes with a plain rice roll). And lastly, the combo also comes with a drink so we got the HK style milk tea.

The rice roll was pretty average – the rice roll itself wasn’t super thin and smooth or anything like that, but it was decent and there were some big pieces of shrimp.

The congee was also quite filling – I would have a hard time finishing it alone but I did eat most of it. Again, it wasn’t the most flavourful congee, but it was not bad at all and was pretty authentic.

Macaroni soup with luncheon meat set ($6)

My fiancรฉ chose a set from their western breakfast menu – the macaroni soup with luncheon meat set. You may wonder why this is under their western menu since I don’t think a lot of non-HK folks eat macaroni soup for breakfast ๐Ÿ˜… but this is considered “western” to HK restaurants. They have different sets where they replace the spam/luncheon meat with either ham or sausages.

The macaroni soup is served in a large but kinda shallow bowl/plate. Inside there are 2 slices of spam and maraconi noodles in a nice chicken soup. The combo also comes with 1 pan fried egg and bread with some butter. The bread is very soft and the crust is removed – I like to put the fried egg on top and eat it with the bread.

Again, decent portion sizes and for $6 it did remind us of HK breakfast.

French toast ($5)

We couldn’t pass on the classic HK style french toast, so we added it to our meal even though I think 2 value sets is already enough food for 2 people. $5 is actually for their afternoon set where you get a french toast and a drink, but we just added it during their breakfast hours, so it’s cheaper than $5 as an add-on item.

The french toast is exactly how we expected it to look and taste – a thick cut of milk toast with butter and deep fried, topped with a slab of butter and some maple syrup. It had a sweet gooey taste and the bread soaked it all up.

Final thoughts

Loewe’s rating: โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ

The breakfast we had at So Good Char Chan Tang really hit the spot for us as we were craving HK style breakfast, but I really can’t give it more than 3 stars because nothing was extraordinary or exceeded my expectations.

The value sets are all authentic and priced really cheap ($6!), but in Singapore you will find that food can get quite cheap anywhere (ex. at hawkers) so in this sense, So Good Char Chan Tang kind of loses that pricing competitive edge, whereas if they were located in Vancouver and selling these sets for $6 CAD I would give them 4 stars.

Overall, this spot is a nice and fast grab-and-go HK spot. If you are Cantonese, you will be familiar with the menu and all the dishes they offer and it will be quite a homey meal.

Sincerely, Loewe
