The Viet Noodle Guy: Authentic Vietnamese food in Burnaby

The Viet Noodle Guy is a Vietnamese restaurant in Burnaby and it has quickly risen to the top of our repeated Uber Eats orders. They offer all the classic Vietnamese eats – pho, vermicelli, banh mi (sandwiches) – for reasonable prices.

This review is based on a compilation of different takeout orders.

Food

This used to be the go-to lunch spot for my boyfriend so he was very excited to order from them when we suddenly saw them pop up on Uber Eats.

Jumbo spring rolls ($4)

Vietnamese spring rolls

I NEED to start this review with these spring rolls because these are the best spring rolls ever. They are actually so good! Unlike the Chinese-style spring rolls with the golden wrapper, they actually fry these spring rolls with the rice paper. This is the way Northern Vietnamese folks make their spring rolls and it gives off a lighter taste without the thicker spring roll wrapper but it’s also fried so deliciously! Amazing with the fish sauce.

We usually select the x2 so you get 2 spring rolls for ~$8.

Viet noodle with rare beef and brisket ($11)

beef pho

This is your classic pho noodle soup. P4 comes with rare beef, brisket, onions, green onions and cilantro.

I am not a big fan of pho if it’s takeout. Even though many restaurants separate the broth and the noodles (so it won’t get soggy), I still find that it just does not taste that good. The noodles sometimes clump together before you dump them into the broth.

Beef stew ($12)

Vietnamese beef stew / bo kho

This beef stew is called bo kho and it’s one of my favourite menu items to order from another Vietnamese restaurant, Banh Mi Tres Bon. We also tried making our own bo kho in our instant pot and it turned out pretty good so I was interested to try The Viet Noodle Guy’s version.

The stew itself tasted good and very similar to the one from Banh Mi Tres Bon, but I felt there wasn’t a lot of ingredients. I was hoping there would be more carrots and beef. But the beef itself was nice and tender.

For this stew, you can also choose between a side of rice, noodles or bread. I choose bread but I did not like the bread they gave me. They gave me banh mi bread, which soaks up the stew really quickly and can even end up dripping down your hand instead of staying in the bread. I also find that the banh mi bread is very crispy so once you bite into it, all these little crumbs and bits fall off – not the ideal bread if you plan to dip it in soup and eat it.

Special vermicelli ($15)

special vermicelli

This special vermicelli comes with lemongrass, grilled Pork, pork patty, a spring roll and shredded pork. It is similar to your classic vermicelli dishes except that this one is gigantic.

Like I’m not even kidding – one special vermicelli can feed 2 adults. Not only does it come with one of their amazing spring rolls, there’s also heaps of meat on top of the vermicelli. Such a good deal!

Banh mi – the mix ($8) and the supreme ($8)

These are our top 2 banh mis from The Viet Noodle Guy. This is because they are both a combination of all the things you can have in a banh mi.

The Mix comes with pate, pork roll, fried ham and vietnamese bacon while the Supreme comes with grilled lemongrass chicken and vietnamese bacon. Both sandwiches have the mayo and salad. A lot of our friends have preferred the Mix but I love lemongrass chicken so it’s always the Supreme for me.

These banh mis are also on the larger size.

Final thoughts

Vietnamese spring rolls

We love The Viet Noodle Guy mostly because of their spring rolls, but also because their portion sizes are generous. We find ourselves repeatedly ordering from them.

We have tried some other miscellaneous things like their salad spring rolls ($4) and their special rice ($15 – similar to their special vermicelli except with rice under instead), but the items listed in this review are the ones we would recommend/order again.

Please check this place out and you MUST order a spring roll!

Sincerely, Loewe
