Ton Ton Sushi: Japanese sushi takeout in Vancouver and New Westminster
Ton Ton Sushi is a Japanese restaurant with 2 locations in Vancouver and 1 location in New Westminster. My friend recommended this place so I decided to give their takeout a try. This review is based on a takeout experience.
Food
We order a variety of appetizers and sushi rolls. Note that prices in this blog post may be slightly higher because we ordered on a 3rd party delivery app and not from their takeout or dine-in menu.
Tako wasabi ($8)
Tako means “octopus”. This appetizer comprises of chopped raw octopus in a wasabi flavoured sauce. To eat it, you pick some of this raw octopus up and roll it in the little pieces of seaweed they give you. It is a spicy and refreshing appetzier, but if you don’t like wasabi (aka if it hurts your nose), you probably should not order this.
Pumpkin cheese croquette ($8)
A croquette is like a deep fried ball of vegetables, meat or fish. The filling in these ones are pumpkin and cheese, a kind of wacky flavour combination. I’ve tried lots of different croquettes over the years – wagyu, potato, corn, squash – but pumpkin and cheese was a new one. Surprisingly, it really didn’t taste much different from a squash croquette. Portion size is smaller than other croquettes I’ve gotten at sushi joints, but they include a small salad (which I did not eat lol).
Prawn tempura ($12)
Prawn tempura is one of my go-to appetizers when checking out a Japanese sushi place. Often times, they don’t travel the best during takeout so the batter can get soggy. It wasn’t too bad in Ton Ton Sushi’s case, but I found $12 a steep price to pay for 6 pieces. Usually they give 8-9 pieces for the same price.
Salmon sashimi ($15)
The salmon sashimi comes in 8 pieces but they are fat pieces so I was happy. Quality was decent and they were not frozen cold like how some places serve their sashimi.
Not much to say since BC already has great quality salmon year-round.
Sakura roll ($13) + Queen Elizabeth roll ($17)
Both of these special roles are included in the above picture. For the sakura roll, on the inside they put spicy tuna tempura, cucumber and avocado. On the outside, they put tuna tataki, tobiko, green onion and ponzu sauce. For the Queen Elizabeth roll, on the inside they put snow crab meat, 2 pieces of prawn tempura, kanpyo and avocado. On the outside they put the same items as the sakura roll so they look almost identical.
I liked both rolls – they were wrapped nicely and did not fall apart when I picked them up with my chopsticks. For 2 very similar rolls, they were not too different from each other in taste so if I had to choose, I would recommend the cheaper roll for similar flavours.
Salmon oshi ($14)
One order of salmon oshi only comes with 6 pieces so we actually had 3 orders in this picture which added up to roughly $42. My friend highly recommended Ton Ton Sushi’s salmon oshi because they are big and come with lots of salmon.
While I agree this is the case, I was slightly disappointed in the salmon oshi because I felt like the ratio was off. There was indeed more salmon, but even more rice and too much mayo sauce for my liking. This made the overall dish feel “greasy” – most likely due to the mayo sauce.
Final thoughts
Loewe’s rating: ⭐⭐⭐
Ton Ton Sushi has an extensive menu and it’s basically what you would expect from a lot of sushi restaurants in Vancouver. They offer many different types of special rolls for a slightly higher price point. The special rolls are decent quality and big portions so I don’t mind paying $1-2 more for a special roll, but I would personally not order their high-end rolls ($16+). Since I was disappointed by their salmon oshi, I would probably not be ordering their other pressed sushi rolls in the future since I feel like salmon oshi is a basic staple item.
Overall, this is another quick and easy spot for sushi takeout. I wouldn’t say it’s any better or worse than their competitors. In total, we spent $97 on this order for 3 people, which is quite expensive but again, we ordered through a delivery app so there are lots of additional fees and service charges.
Sincerely, Loewe
